It's not the finish that intrigues me on this bass, it's the fact that someone installed a Horseshoe p/up from a Rickenbacker lapsteel on this bass, or at least the surround from one. Leads me to believe there has been more done to this bass sonce it left the factory.....

And what's that thing in the mute pad compartment? A pickup???
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Oops, two threads on the same bass. Sergio, I think that is just the foam mute in a tattered state.
Is everybody ready?

there are clearly 2 screw heads visible on the mute pad ... the horseshoe pickup and the surround and the pickguard all appear to be non-original ...

This morning I,ve just picked up a 67 body with a mute that looks like someone held a blowtorch to it. It looks just like a p/up.

A 69 would probably have had a hi-gain originally I think. I,ve only seen one other 69 with a horseshoe and that wasn,t stock apparently. You never know from this time tho...

That fretboard really looks similar in colour to your old 68 Jeff. Nothing like my Dec 68. Maybe this was an assembled body hanging round the factory from that time and when someone asked for J/G this baby got the call. Cool bass...

Looking at it again, those do appear to be screw heads. My eyes are getting old.

The horseshoe and surround in question. I too think something is out of place here (previously mentioned in other thread).

Is that how the surrounds on lapsteels were made?

Notice the difference in thickness between those two examples? The JG example is much thicker than the FG ones. The former shoes are more like the reissue shoes than '60s shoes.

The reissue shoes are the ones on my V63 pickup that I spread apart to angle them up and out of the way of the strings. More like the original '60s horseshoes.

The surround is consistent with the kind that was used on some of the lap steels. I have never seen a '69 so I don't know if Rickenbacker started using that type of surround on basses at some point. The old horseshoe bobbins I have seen look like the one Jeff Scott has pictured above. This pickup may have been assembled from parts.

They are screws in the mute cavity. The one sitting in front of me now has four. The mute sits on them. I,ll take a few pics and post them.

If that's not a mute it is an awfully skinny pickup, looks just like a mute to me with a chunk out of it in the middle.
