Stunning Jdog!! I'm surprised this bass did not sell here! I bet it will sell now!!

Your bass is the oldest 4002 I have run across in the past 11 years--and I've been looking. The bass is already in the Registy on page 2, as I used to live in Oregon.

The following information is at this time unconfirmed--but you might want to confirm it with John Hall, if he is so inclined. When I first bought that 4002 the previous owner indicated that it was #7. Again, unconfirmed.

Mine is also an Sept. 77 QI 3871. That would rank the 4002 "project bass" to be one of the earliest ones. I need to figure out where mine falls in the mix. The "neck pup" route is huge, in width. Looks like an experiment in a way. Either that or someone having way too much fun with a forstner bit!!

Hmm, just checked, this may be the earliest known 4002 by the production number in the jack plate!! Very cool!!

I've always loved the looks of the 4002 model in particular - the checkered binding, the leather look of the pickup covers, the pick guard and the relative rarity make it a very desirable bass for me. I could drool over one all day. Despite the utterly ludicrous asking price of the one currently available on the Bay for $25 grand, it's one of the best examples I've seen. It looks to be in pristine condition and and the grain of the maple is simply stunning.

I noticed that the seller is inviting "offers" so on the basis that value is whatever the purchaser feels the item is worth to him, I thought I'd have a punt. I offered the max it would be worth to me - $10 grand - and the offer was immediately refused.

Oh well, back to dreaming....

I love my 4002. So much so, I bought a second one!! Well, sort of, it needs a ton of work to make her serviceable again. You say you like the leather type look of the pups? Take a look at this. The walnut stain on this 4002 makes the bass look like it was covered in distressed leather!!

Now that is simply stunning Sepp - even better than the one on the Bay! The two major loves in my life (apart from the good lady of course!) are nice basses and nice wood - this is the perfect combination of both!

If ever you decide to sell, there's a buyer here.

Thanks! I too admire nice wood grain, and this bass has it in spades!! The back side looks like a checkerboard!

Alas, I need to be up front. This is the famed "Dave Pascoe" 4002. Dave owned her for years and by some miracle I got lucky after contacting him and he sold her to me. I don't think he really wanted to but part of the sale revolved around him getting first dibs on her if I were ever to sell her. She is is without flaw and I'm scared to death to damage her, which has a direct influence on how and where I use her. Do I play her, sure do. Do I play her hard< yup, as hard as practical since she really likes a light touch. Anything thicker than a .66 pick and she rebels. This bass makes me a more technical player since any flaw is amplified by her sensitive pups.

No bass I have ever played feels as good as this one does. Chris from PotR brokered the sale for me and I think my eyes and expression were easy to read moments after I began to tool around on her in his shop. Love at first sight, yes it was. Tone wise,it's everything I ever wanted to sound like.

Plus he has both pickups wired to the XLR (instead of just the bridge pickup like was stock). Still very cool, of course.
