Sadly, the original owner's elderly father is probably not up to the task of removing pickguards and dating pots, but we may be able to get the truss rod count. Unfortunately, neither of us can just pop over and do it - the bass is in Massachusetts, my friend is in New York, and I'm in Minnesota. Not quite sure how things will proceed from here, but we're a heck of a lot better informed than we were a day ago!

Great stuff, everybody - my New York friend conveys his grateful thanks, and will be passing all this on appropriately.

Cheers,
David

we have members in Ma. who may be able to help- also see post about red dot position markers and measuring the neck PU space to the neck (1/2 or 1")- we may be able to date it that way without pulling anything.

+1. It's quite real. That "ridge" on the jack plate is a reflection.
Am I the only one who noticed the red dots?

1974!

Indeed, red dots. so 1974 indeed!
I wanted to write "looks like a red dots 1974 4001" but it must have come out wrong somehow.

Actually, the number on the plate appears to be random, as the XX plate on my custom "4008CS" is 1216. I do know that these plates are registered to the owner when RIC sends one out.

Oct 12th, 1216 - King John of England loses his crown jewels in The Wash, probably near Fosdyke, perhaps near Sutton Bridge

Anybody ever find them?
