Odd Looking Ric

Post by spongebob »

Over here in the UK, they are doing weekly repeats of 'Top Of The Pops' from 1978. Started a couple of years back with '76, and luckily they have continued.

Watched last weeks, and spotted a very unusual - I assume modified - in the Boomtown Rats' performance.

Some kind person has added the whole programme to Youtube - they are the first band on.

WIngs also pop up later, with some nice shots of Macca's Ric.

I tried to get a still of the BR bass - it's certainly something I've not seen before. Anyone else?

Looks like a 70s 4001...with a toaster in the neck, poured inlays, and no pickguard??? It looks glossier than normal in all the split-second shots of it...honestly I can't tell, there must be a Boomtown Rats fan on here who knows for sure.

Well, except for the triangle inlays and binding...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

That ultra-glossy finish doesn't appear to extend beyond the top face of the body, so perhaps it is a thin sheet of something stuck over the original finish, or a full body sized pick guard, if you want to look at it that way.... :?: :?

It just looks like an Azureglo under harsh lights to me.
