I thought the set neck versions of those models were not introduced until '73? My very first Ric bass (about 1974-ish) was a 4000 neck through from one of the first few years of the 70' s. And just to echo a few of the other posts,i am not at all technically oriented, but having owned and played a lot of Ric basses over the years,my '74 4000 is one of the best playing and sounding Ric's i've run across, altho it has also been modded quite a bit. I have had the pleasure of playing both Joey's and Gareth's set neck basses, and they just feel equally fantastic, something about that whole "wonky" way they're put together just delivers!Colonel Sanders wrote:Same thing goes for my 4001S and 4000 from 1972. Next to my 4004s, it's my second favorite bass guitar to play. Seen in my avatar ----->
Why do set-neck 4000's look a bit askew?

You are correct. Both my 4001S and 4000 have the neck through body configuration with the shedua strip. Yet for some reasons, the bridge, for both basses, is not centered with the strip and is offset toward the upper wing by 1 cm.woodyng wrote:

I never noticed before that things were askew on my 4000 FL BG.

This '72 is neck-thru and everything is where it should be.

I did not realise this from my iPad. Finding a period correct tailpiece may be a bit difficult.
