Paulie--very sorry to hear about your friend. I hope the show goes well.

Looks like we'll have a good sized group this time out. I think Rich covered the songlist basics pretty well. Simple is good!

Thanks, Gary. My girlfriend and I were looking forward to the trip. I was looking forward to seeing everyone. Ah, next year.

As for songs or "set list" ..... its a Jam, so anything can happen .... likely could be Classic Rock, British Invasion, Jangle-Pop and New Wave type tunes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s era. Or maybe the opposite .... surf instrumentals, bluesy solos or maybe some jazz-like jams free from the Top 40 single structure ??

Probably always a dose of tunes by Rickenbacker identified artists such as Beatles, Byrds, Searchers, The Who, Creedence, Jefferson Airplane, Yes, Tom Petty, R.E.M., The Smithereens, Weller The Jam, The Church, The Plimsouls, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Smiths, etc.
And then again there can be songs by bands that do not necessarily have Rickenbacker identification such as Hendrix, Cream, Chuck Berry, Stones, Stevie Ray, Humble Pie, ZZ Top, Allman Bros, Pink Floyd, Lynrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Dire Straits, Marshall Tucker, R&B Motown, or who knows ...

To conceptualize some song ideas offered at a So Cal Ric Jam .... check this spread sheet out from last year:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... fUFE#gid=0 not necessarily the same tunes would happen at BARC, but the ideas list might be representative of some of the songs the some jam attendees might be familiar with ?

Maybe Kira or Doug or Gareth or Harry or Steve, etc. can chime in here with some song ideas .... :)

Does Gareth get to play on ALL of the Motorhead songs?

Wow, that is one large spreadsheet of songs I have never learned, but like to hear and sing. Can I put in some requests? Like "Day in the Life" and "I Want You"

I went through the list to see which ones I thought I could maybe learn. I intentionally ignored Beatles thru REM, plus Smiths and the Jam (too good or can't think of a bass line I can hum), so that put me into the 80's, which is alright since I spent alot of quality time there. I could figure out The Church's "Under the Milky Way" and "Reptile" (cool little riff and pause) and Echo's "Killing Moon." I'd like to play the Smithereens, but don't think I could get any right in time (Blood and Roses maybe). If those work for anyone, great let me know.

For other RIC bass-related, maybe Deep Purple (Black Night, but suggest another if you want). Kyuss (Demon Cleaner, Fatso Forgetso)? There's a band called Clutch that have a jam feel to them (and their bassist is using a 4003 this tour). Maybe play around some of those bass lines?

And does Black Flag count? Kira (the Low?) favored Rickenbackers. We can knock a mess those out in 10-15 minutes.

I'd like to toss a few out there and hear what they would sound like through RIC instruments. I'm not expecting any hits on these, but here goes:
Led Zeppelin - Nobody's Fault but Mine, The Ocean, When the Levee Breaks (12 string in place of the harmonica?)
Black Sabbath - Into the Void, Electric Funeral, Children of the Grave, Snowblind, NIB
Finally, I know a whole mess of Tool songs, but they are not very jammy and are in Drop-D.

For equipment, I may have a couple of fuzz pedals that I'll bring. One is an MXR Bass Fuzz Deluxe and maybe a ProCo Rat, too. My Baby Blue II combo only has 2x8" and a 5" horn and doesn't really throw the bass. Great for home and maybe a nice way to A/B some basses. Then go to the Trace Elliot to move some air.

Finally, I don't drink booze, but mentioned something with Joey about bringing a cordial to the confluence (I'm Johnnie Walker). I have no problem doing that, but I've never attended one of these. So you guys let me know. It'll be Black if anything.

It will all work out, some of us are into Beatles and Byrds stuff, others Petty, others later musical tastes. I would think pretty much anything goes as long as we're having fun. We're all different age groups, so we're bound to have different tastes in music, some 60s, some 90s. I'm happy just to hang out with Rickenbacker peeps of any era, and as far as the jam or whatever we play goes, it's all good fun ! :D :D :D

I'll be bringing my 360/12V64 and 330/6 and Fender Vibroverb combo amp, only 35 watts, but more than enough for the venue. My knees are knocking after seeing that bass rig ! No one mentioned the Who ? Well it's all good. Thanks for all the work Rich, :D as Paulie said, you deserve a medal for going the extra bit. :D :D

Hi Johnnie, the spreadsheet song list was just an example of song ideas suggested by participants at the last So Calif Ricken Jam in December. Its' by no means anything cast in concrete ... it was only mentioned here to give some ideas of the mixed bag of tunes that BARC attendees can consider, and to help get the discussion rolling when the question came up, of what songs to play.

I'm guessing that BARC will end up with a wide diversity of tunes from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s .... and jammers can sit in on what ever batch of tunes they enjoy or feel inspired by. I imagine it will be a pretty free form jam ... just finding out who knows what songs in common. :) I think we have a couple of attendees who have volunteered for some drum-duty, so folks can switch off if the drummer wants to play guitar or bass on some favorite tune and somebody else cover the drum kit, etc.

Most importantly, when it comes to song suggestions, it seems to me that often the critical factor is, if anybody knows the lyrics and can carry a lead vocal !!

Please feel free to offer up song suggestions/ideas..... its all about pairing up folks who know some songs in common. I can play rhythm guitar on The Church's Under the Milky Way and Echo's Killing Moon and The Smithereens' Blood and Roses with you, if we have somebody who knows the lead guitar parts ....

Regarding gear to bring: pretty much open to whatever you want to bring. We will have a couple of practice size amps in the gear display room, for people to test-out each other's guitars or basses .... and the jam room will have whatever amps the folks bring. Music Spectrum provides the drum kit, the P.A., the mikes and the ambience.

Regarding bringing in refreshments, I think its OK as long as we are discreet about it, and pick up after ourselves and don't leave bottles and martini shakers or plastic cups with old lime wedges lying around. But I will defer to Kira on this subject, as she is more acquainted with the manager of Music Spectrum and whatever house rules they have.

= = = = =
Gary (Modrock) ---- regarding The Who songs, I can join you for I Can't Explain and See Me Feel me, Listening to You

= = = = =
How about other BARC attendees chirping in with some song ideas here, so we can find out who knows songs in common with each other ....

Drinking responsibly is fine with the management. We have a comfy foyer/receiving area to use without worrying about liquids near the gear.

For Kenney Howes -- here is the Larkspur Ferry schedule for Weekends that can get you from/to the Ferry Building in downtown San Francisco. The Larkspur Landing terminus is a short distance from the BARC event site in Marin and we can easily swing down and pick you up at Larkspur Landing.
If you catch the Ferry at 12:40 PM from SF it arrives at Larkspur at 1:30 PM.
Its a great scenic ferry ride and bar service is available ....

Sorry these numbers/columns don't align when I post them here :( (See the web link below)

Thanks for the kind words guys. :D These Rickenbacker get-togethers are just a lot of fun !
Now if I can just get up and back on Highway 5, from L.A. to BARC, and avoid getting stopped by the Calif Highway Patrol this time ....

I am thinking to bring:
Arnquisted FG 360-12 that Modrock wants to test out the string-pair spacings;
my Daphne Blue refinished 480 for something different;
and if I have space to pack one more guitar, I am deciding between either the Turq 650 Atlantis or the FG V64 six stringer or the JetGlo 370 WB. For amps I am thinking to bring my little Mesa Boogie Subway Blues for the jam room, as the Boogie is easier to pack for the trip than the Vox AC 30 !! (understatement ! ) Likewise, I will also bring a little Vox DA5 practice amp, that BARCers can use in the guitar display room.

paologregorio wrote:Hi all,
I am going to have to announce my regrets; a friend of the band I'm in (Smiling face down), and a personality in the local vintage bike scene with a lot of vintage motorcycleing friends, Karla Munoz, was killed a couple of days ago when a careless driver into the lane she was riding in. Smiling face down's been asked to play a benefit show for her on May 18th locally, at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, so I won't be able to go to BARC.
Sad that. I have a few friends who knew her well and are very sad at her passing. As a biker myself I know how easily this happens.

I never had the pleasure of meeting her, but her benefit is more important. There'll be other BARCs

Wait. What ? I'm expected to play as well ? I weaseled out of that last year. I just come for the booze, chat, and to ogle the gear :D

I'll bring the beast, which can actually take two inputs for two basses if desired, so you only get 500 watts each.

I'm thinking of bringing the whole herd, so 11 assorted basses, guitars and a mandolin. Depends on how much I can fit in the truck. Definitely the rare stuff. The 4004LK, the 4008, the 4001CS, the 73 4001, the converted 4001S, the 67 450, the 620/12, the 5002v58, and the whatever else I can squeeze in.

Ooh yes, and the the new blue burst 4003FL PW just finished up for me.
