I've decided against the tung oil and would like to go with a "Satin Sealer" as used on the 4001c64s.

It sounds like the easiest finish on the planet!

Q: Am I wrong in thinking this is easy?
Q: Has anyone done this before?
Q: Is there a recommended product or procedure?
Q: Is there an aeresol solution? (Hopefully.)

I'm thinking I can find a "rattle can" (HA! I LOVE that term!) and just use some super fine steel wool between coats.

test it on a cheap bass or other piece of wood first

oh heck ... just use flat latex house paint ... preferably 6 coats ... and don't bother removing the strings or chrome ...

Naw, but seriously peoples... WHAT should I test?! A spray can of Urethane? Acrylic? Laquer? No spray can? Just any clue will do.

(And if you've seen my 4003, you know I could do no worse than what's already been done to it.)

I used tung oil on my 4003s5v63 bass ... I don't think urethane is a good idea for a ric bass ...

You can do it yourself and get pretty good results...but it requires patience and a little skill....you can also use spray cans and get good results but there are steps and procedures that you MUST follow!...go to this site and read everything you can about refinishing...don't use steel wool...I suggest nitro finish but it's not what rick uses...or just send it to Dr. Dolan who does great refinishing work for a very reasonable price....http://reranch.august.net/phpBB-2.0.4/phpBB2/index.php

Jeff - What kind of tung oil do you use? (Now that I've researched enough to confuse myself.) Polymerized tung oil? Varnish/Tung oil? 100% pure, all-natural tung oil?

I used the tung oil with mineral spirits in it ... I go with 2 or 3 coats ...

I am going to a swamp ash p-bass body that way soon ... then I will do a 4 to 5 conversion and outfit it with pj pickups and black trim ... and a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard ...

the oil finish makes a lighter bass and it changes the tone and resonance a little and it is easy to touch up or refin later ...
