Re: Elixir coated strings
I installed the Elixirs I on my Ruby 4003 on Saturday. My first impression was not good. The tone was ok, but not a great improvement over the used stock RIC strings. I did like the feel of the strings, but really didn't like the gauge or tension. I decided to keep them on for a while and see if it would grow on me. That lasted just a day and I took them off yesterday and installed a set of Circle K strings which I really like.
FWIW I bought the nickel plated coated strings in medium gauge. I did keep them in the event that I wanted to try them again later, but I suspect they'll just sit around for a few years until I decided to give them away or trash them.

Re: Elixir coated strings
I had a set of Elixers once on a non Rick 5 string. I had a few dead spots with those strings. Went back to D'Addario, dead spots gone.
JETGLO should officially be renamed JETGLO ROCKS!
Re: Elixir coated strings
Some of the comments are quite ironic, given that the Elixir strings are produced for Gore by D'Addario.

Re: Elixir coated strings
I have been using Elixir strings for my round wounds for years also. And D'Addario chrome flats for the flat sound. Oh and then GHS BAss Boomers for my 3000. Shorty's are hard to come by it seems yet I like the Boomers of all the types I have tried for the 3000. I am testing a new pair for Elixir right now got a few more weeks to go before i send them back and give opinion of them.... Not to sure what the difference is in em compared to older versions BUT!!! They still feel and sound great. MY 77 4001 has had same set of Elixir strings on it for 5 years and they still sound fresh and brite...
Agree with John about the production for Gore by D'Addario

Re: Elixir coated strings
Got my sets of Stainless steel Elixir strings and tried a set..... It last only 5 minutes and took them off immediately!!
They were 'dull' sounding, no life at all, although they felt great on the fingers I must admit! They sounded like 'half-dead' strings to my ear and personal preference!
Put the Dean Markley Helix back on and the tone monster was resuscitated the way it should be!
Not for me Elixir, thank you very much!

Re: Elixir coated strings
I just installed the Elixir set I had on my 73 4001 Jetglo. These are nickel roundwound.
While replacing the strings I realized that the strings that were there were also Elixir (same thing, same gage).
The old strings must have been installed a long time ago as the coating was peeling off. I was surprised to hear the sound difference was very minimal. So it seems to be true, Elixir strings do last a long time.
I have not ever found a set of nickel roundwound I ever like until these. I quite like the similarity to the Roto Swing Bass 66 with a pretty strong high mid. I did not hear the typical brilliance I hear with nickel roundwound.
Maybe I have found my new favorite strings?
Cheers

Re: Elixir coated strings
I have Rotosound RN66LD strings on mine right now. Just put them on a few months ago. finally changed the factory 11 year old strings that were nice and broken in
The Rotosounds are a little bright for me but I knew they would be that way when I bought them but I figured I would try them anyway.
Just ordered a set of SIT power flats. not full flats but a semi.......we'll see how they work out

Re: Elixir coated strings
I like the sound, but not the feel of the Elixers i tried. Finding out they're made by Daddario is interesting because i feel the same about all the daddario string sets i've tried.....
Re: Elixir coated strings
I put some on my 4003 - really impressed so far. What im after is longevity of the tone, i use Elites almost all the time as the tone is perfect for what I want. The Elixirs seem to have a very similar tone but are lasting longer, so all good
