Damn, yup, that's the one! :D Really shows how thin, from front to back they were. Almost as much fretboard thickness as neck thickness!!

Nice!!

I also have to agree with the newer basses being great. While there may be years with thinner necks, the 2011 4003 I own has a real sweet neck. I'd say it's ideal for my taste. It plays really well, has a killer sound, and is quite stable. If it were not for the defect in the paint round the tailpiece (Jetglo) I'd rate it as in the the top 3 of my heard. Seriously!! It is a true workhorse that can do everything quite well and look great while doing it.

Jeff,

That bass has one of the nicest necks I've ever tried, IMO.

Even though I am not a real bassist, I would have a difficult time weeding down to one last Rickenbacker bass. Off the top of my head, it would be either the 4000FL BG, the 4001S WHT, or the 4003S/5 Blackstar:

Not surprised. I'm betting Tony C will also say his CS.

Those who have seen this one will agree that it's a keeper. My original 1972, once used and scuffed Mapleglo, but restored by Ted Staberow and Paul Wilczynski to this gorgeous berry burst. I bought this used in 1975 and is not scheduled for departure.

YES!
But seriously,i would love to check one out someday! I am enjoying playing my recently acquired Carvin ac40 fretless at thiis time, but i don't know if i would ever play enough fl consistently to make a bigger financial investment in one. Both my 4004's have bridge pickups far enough back that i can cop a Jeff Berlin-ish pseudo fretless tone from them.

I am waiting to receive my 1972 4001 Fireglo checkerboard back from Paul W after a refret.

It may become my keeper.

I did not play with it for long as it went straight to Paul W after I purchased it. But I remeber it was sounding very good!
