Hey Guys,

Sorry the last review is taking so long, but some family stuff has come up, and I haven't gotten to the last one yet. Hope to have it done next week, at the latest. Thanks for your patience.

P.S. Did anyone ever release the Star Club tracks on CD? If so, anyone know where it's available?

I'm in the process of ordering the complete set of the five Pye CD albums. I should be receiving The "Sugar & Spice" CD and the "Take me for what I'm worth" CD in about a week or so.

I'll let you know my thoughts when I have a chance to play them through.

Best wishes from Australia

The Star-Club tracks were released in Germany on CD by Phonogram about 10 years (or more) ago. As far as I know it is not currently available.

Does anyone know who owns the masters for "I Can Tell"? Also who wrote the song?

Thanx

Pye re-release CD "Take me for what I'm Worth"

My first exposure to these new re-releases.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the whole CD. I don't have any problem with listening to both the mono versions and then stereo on the one disk. If it annoys you, just listen to the one set or the other. Love the tracks "Too Many Miles", "Four Strong Winds" and John McNally's composition, "It's Time"; this is outstanding in my opinion, with a great beat and a catchy lyric. The nice surprise with these releases are the bonus tracks. Good to hear "So Far Away" and a favoutite of mine " I'm Never Coming Back". The sleeve notes are excellent. So much information and great pics. All in all a great buy.

Pye Re-release CD "Sugar & Spice"

I'll be brief on this one. My overall opinion on this CD, is much the same as above. Cannot praise it enough. I'm really starting to enjoy listening to "Sugar & Spice' in three languages now. Stand out tracks for me are; "Unhappy Girls", "Saints & Searchers" and "Oh my Lover". But wait! you are all saying that of course Erwin never says anything bad about the Searchers and everything they do is great. Well I am going to surprise you by having a go at Chris Curtis' French version of "Saints & Searchers". I have always thought that Chris has a great voice, but on this track, it is just not happening. I cannot understand why he sang all six verses in the same register. I was waiting for him to lift his vocals like Tony did, but it just did not come and he certainly has this ability. Maybe singing in French made him feel a little coy and embarassed. It really is a non-event on this CD, but good to have it in my collection from an historical point of view.

I should be receiving "It's the Searchers" and "Sounds like Searchers' in about a week and then "Meet the Searchers" will follow. Will give you my reviews on them when I get a listen

Best wishes from Australia.

I have a question for anyone to answer. On the Pye re-release of "Sugar & Spice" there is a bonus track called "Bye bye Johnny". Who is singing lead on this. Is it Mike Pender?

Please let me know someone.

Best wishes.

The leadsinger on Bye Bye Johnny is John McNally. You can also hear Tony Jackson joing him singing the chorus.

Finally got the first three. But to my disappointment the bonus tracks are in mono even when stereo versions are available. So these cd are not the optimum of what is possible. Shame on the one who compiled them.

Hi Guys,

Sorry this took so long, but had some health problems, and updating my MSN has played hell with my computer.ANYWAY:

Review #5- "It's theSearchers". Same format, mono, bonus tracks, stereo. Total cuts-35. Bonus tracks:I Pretend I'm With You, Someday We're Gonna Love Again, Noone Else Could Love Me, I(Who Have Nothing), Shame, Shame, Shame, Needles and Pins- in German (also on the 30th Anniversary Set), and Don't Throw Your Love Away- in French (but sung by Mike, not Chris, who did the other French versions)

This CD is worth it just for the stereo of "Needles and Pins". Aside from hearing BOTH guitars, and the harmonic, you can clearly hear, word for word, Chris' falsetto harmony coupled with Mike's lead. Additionally, the version of "I (Who Have Nothing)" is superb. I also noticed how much tremolo the band used on guitar on quite a few of thre tracks. Plus this CD just happens to have many of my favorite Searchers LP tracks, as well as B's. One of the best of the series.

P.S.: Mike, Are you sure the bonus tracks are mono. They sound stereo on my Walkman.- JOHN

On the first three the bonus tracks are mono. Yesterday I received the two others but had no time yet to listen to them.

Finally I have them all. Sound qualtity is very very good. But two remarks (beside bonus tracks mostly mono): Take Me... includes a Tony Jackson sung song. Sounds Like... has Let The Good Times Roll with a little worse sound quality than the rest of the songs. As it wasn't included on the original US lp (What Have They Done.. instaed) there might be another source for this stereo version.

I have just received my re-release CD of "Take Me For What I'm Worth"The stereo versions sparkle in my opinion but I can appreciate the appeal of the original mono versions and to go futher understand that for some having these served up on vinyl would be the ultimate, though personally I cannot understand this. The Jackie DeShannon authored "Each Time" is my favourite, definitely a single then and now,but that's probably wishful thinking.I could go on but then I'd be adding more than a message. The liner notes provide an extremely informative bio.of the bands peak recording years, just over two years. It's hard to believe there wasn't an audience to drink from their particular stream of recordings after 1965.
