When I Get Home

Very interesting, Michael, especially how that one reviewer called it a "complicated" song! Personally I always thought it was a good record and though it may not have been their most exciting, I don't think it deserves all the bashing it has received over the years.
Incidentally, the flip "I'm Never Coming Back" is a favorite of mine.
Keep up the good work.

A great song with a nice 12 string riff. This song was ahead of its time. The harmonies are well done and it has a solid melody. Too sweet and gentle for the times perhaps. I agree SJ, the review was too harsh.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Tim: Was this Tony Hatch's call? If so it is perhaps an example that he was not tuned in to the Searchers' audience at that time. This critique of Tony Hatch has been made by others before, however, was the decision to release When I Get Home left completely up to Tony?

Along those lines, it is worth noting that Kapp seems to have passed up on "When I Get Home" in favor of "You Can't Lie To A Liar" b/w "Don't You Know Why"--which was a total flop commercially speaking, despite being strong on both sides. Perhaps audiences were just tiring of The Searchers' records in general at this point? Certainly they had been on the wane in the US and their loss of fortune in the UK soon followed. A fickle one, the entertainment industry.
I read somewhere (the McNally interview on the Searchers website?) that noone in the band was really hot for "When I Get Home", except Chris. They had to change key from the intro to the first stanza because it wasn't a rock key."Each Time" was a much better song. As I've opined elsewhere, "When I Get Home" sounded tired (and about a 1/2 beat too slow).
AS for the US market, I think having KAPP for a label was finally catching up with the Searchers. "Searchers No. 4" was, to me, their most innovative album (and Kapp gets some of the credit. They did a MUCH better job than PYE in selcting, and matching songs on their various LPs, since they could pick and choose). Yet, if I didn't ruthlessly search the record outlets, I NEVER knew when a new Searchers LP was out. Kapp did absolutely NO promo, and when the singles fell off, the band fell off the radar screen. That plus no mangement with a plan (for the U.S anyway) killed them off. As John noted in the re-release liner notes- all people outside the band were interested in was the fast buck, and screw the band (which they did).
