I'd just like to know why he quit using his Rickenbacker basses.

I'm with Scott.
You know, with the recent "Anniversary Tour" that Rush had, how nice would it have been for him to pull out that 4001 again?!
It would have looked great with his current washer & dryer backline!

Oh yeah, and uh...maybe get the last word on whether or not he used the Rick on Moving Pictures or not.

Andrews bass IS Maurice Gibbs bass. THE one.

Supposedly, at least one track on "My Favorite Headache" was recorded using an Alembic.

Speaking of the late great Maurice, he's shown on the cover of the Gibb brother's 1972 album 'To Whom It May Concern' playing a beautiful white 4001 with block binding, black pickguard & nameplate, full-width fretboard inlays, fingergrip, the whole works. I forget: is that Rick bass documented anywhere?
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Whats the story on that bass Andrew? It looks to white to be an original finish,,,Chris calls it a V63,,, but the pickguard, fingerboard, and especially the horseshoe PU screams to be original vintage hardware. ???"

"Ahhhh..... Wints' snowflake-glo V63!!! Always a pleasure to see that one!!"

Scott, Chris...

Guys....

can't you recognise an RM1999 when you see one?! Image

Definitely the flagship bass of the forum. The holy grail of Ric basses. Image

It is an original 1964 RM1999 Scott, and is the bass used by Maurice Gibb in the 60,s for studio and live work until about 1970. It,s well documented, being originally Fireglo, and then refinished white in 67. Used on all recordings and on T.V appearances like the Ed Sullivan show.

The bass Sergio mentions may have been given to a D.J in the U.K. back in the day. I was told this by the Fan Club, who asked Dick Ashby, their old tour manager.

Beautiful Axe Wints.

Maurice also holds a special place in my heart because of his affinity for the 3000 series which he played for awhile too.
I wonder whatever happened to those babies?

In this interview, he explains why he switched from his Ric to the Jazz.
It's towards the bottom of the interview..

Thanks Mike, great read. I was just listening to an old bootleg vinyl from Rush's first tour, which is pretty easily accessable on the internet these days. The bass is really in the forefront of the sound, even then. A great bass and vocal performance. Just amazing.

Nice article.
Interesting little tidbit about him looking for an old 4000 model.
Don't tell Jaymi though - could be fightin' words!

Hopefully Geddy will find a 4000 & use it on an upcoming record!

I wish Geddy would let someone get the history of his Rics (serial numbers, where, when he bought them, etc.) for historic purposes, ya know to set the record straight for us Ric nuts.

Geddy should try a modern 4003 or 4004 if he wants to get the low end ... that's one of the reasons I like the new ric basses ... mids, low mids and low end ... while still keeping a treble bite ...

Jeff - what low end? have you tried his signature Fender? this bass has very thin low end. I had one and sold it. Others have complained about the lack of bottom in the Geddy Lee Jazz, and there's no capacitor to shunt there.
