Bob, 6/32" would be high. Remember, he's talking 32nds, not 64ths.

And no one has specified where the measurement is taken. I always measure at the 17th. Just checked my 2003 4003, it's 7/64" on the bass side, 4/64" on the treble side.

Using the 17th fret to compare with Dave's measurements, my '73 4001 is 5/64" on the bass and treble sides, the '67 4005WB is 3/16" on both sides, and the 4003FL is 7/64" on both sides; the 4004Cii is not available to measure at this time but is most likely similar to the 4005WB. I set all my strings to the same height for a consistent feel across the fingerboard.

I set my action as low as I can get it without noticable buzz or overtones. I never pull out a ruler or straight edge. I know what I like, and in my opinion, know how it should feel, so thats what I go with.

I use D'Addario XL-170 nickle roundwounds, very, very consistant strings. Image, This coupled with the proper nut heighth, (often overlooked), in my opinion, is the secret.
