There's at least a couple of American tour films with a Ric bass sharing the stage with Geezer from that period. One's dimly lit, the other's broad daylight. I don't recall the exact locations or dates but I believe it was in support of Paranoid.

Now that I remembered to look at this thread when I had some earbuds around, I have to say that I totally hear what you're hearing, Sepp, but it actually reminds me more of a Fender or Peavey T-40. The upper-mid clang is there but the bottom is kind of missing. The signal really sits in the low mids which is very Fender-ish to my ears whereas many recorded Rics have more of that bottom end thunder only found elsewhere on basses like the Hofners and EB-0s, etc. Maybe that's the big staying power of the Ric, instead of doing one of these sounds (clang or thud) it kind of merges both in a happy middle.

EDIT: Here's an example of what I mean about Ric tone. Paul's is, to my ear, very nearly a modern Ric "out of the box".

Hi Joshua. Can't agree more with you on Paul D'amour's sound that he got with his CS4001. His harmonics sing and I am chasing that tone myself. (Any idea if he still uses the CS in Feersum Endjinn or does he use an ATK?)

But Geezer used that bass for the 1978 "Never Say Die" tour. I put a link in this thread earlier that has 10 well shot videos and the 4001 is front and center. I should say I put a link to a link of a thread I started a couple years back and it is easy to miss.

The 4001CS makes an appearance in a Feersum Ennjin video for "Fishing Grounds" IIRC (unfortunately overdubbed with bunches of clips from some sexploitation film so it kind of breaks up the song), and several parts sound like his tone on Undertow, so it's a very strong possibility that his 4001CS is on the record. I don't know if he uses an Ibanez ATK, but he's been known to use an Ovation Magnum and a Stingray besides the Ric. I suspect now that he's done so much work in film scoring he probably vacillates between several different basses as the different songs call for them. Some of the tracks on Feersum Ennjin sound like they have more than one bass guitar, as well.

Geezer has used a 4001 on and off since the late 1970s. He got it from Roger Glover.

Geezer actually got the bass from Glenn Hughes. Both Deep Purple bass players.

I remember reading that interview but I've seen video of him playing the Ric at another, totally different show, though it could easily have been on the same tour.

Yep. Absolutely agree with you here. Unless you put dual coil Nordstrand PU on your Jazz, which will bring also in P territory if you use the neck pickup.

Personally, I feel at home with a P.

I don't like P bass necks. However, some of the bass players I greatly admire are/were P bass guys, like Geezer, Steve Harris, and John Wetton when he was in King Crimson.

Purple is a great band. Incredibly diverse in their musical spectrum. Psychedelic, classical, hard rock, funk, even a bit of country.... just about anything. So many players have gone through.
