Next 1964 4001 to be restored to its former glory

Post by Colonel Sanders »

Here is the 1963/64 4001S No Glo project that Larry Davis will soon resurrect. It is not clear if this is a 63 or a 64. There were 4 holes to secure the truss rod cover, this would date it to 63. On the other hand, the jack plate indicates a bass from March 1964 (very few units after Chris Squire bass). This bass obviously had lived a full life... It may even have started its life as a 4000.

Thanks to Tony Matura, Dane Wilder, Mark Walker, Xsubs and an unknow eBay seller not willing to ship to Australia, I could collect the missing parts.

Nice!! I love me a good resurrection thread!! :D I see it's in Larry's shop already!! I'd recognize that work bench and beach towels anywhere from all the 4002 fotos he sent Look at those truss rod grooves in the boddy! I've seen them before on other early basses but oddly my 65 does not have them.!!

Actually, I would be guessing that line was drawn when the neck routing was cleaned up by the previous owner. As previously mentioned, I would think that the bass started its life as a 4000. It apparently had a very messy neck routing done that was rather well fixed. I need to ask RIC what was the original bass for the serial number.

It will be obviously more of a player than a collector dream. I do not mind too much doing a "bad investment" to bring one old 400X to life.

The grain is nice but the fretboard will be replaced. It was either replaced or heavily planed at one point. The fretboard is way too thin. And the radius is not constant.

Your help along with Mark Walker in clearing some of the mystery about this bass was much appreciated. Looking at one of the picture of the 61 4000 currently on eBay has now convinced me my NoGlo bass started its life as a 63 4000, judging by the long truss rod sticking out of the fingerboard, into the body. The other tell tale is the 4 screw holes under the truss rod cover (as Mark and you picked out).

Was this a 4000 bass that was built in 63 and was sent out of the factory in March 64? Or is it a carcass that was subsequently matched to a 64 jack plate? I will probably never know. Not that I really care either.

The main goal is to bring this baby back to life. In Fireglo that is...
