Re: 4001 1974 restoration
It will be Burgundy! Lovely color! I'm in contact with Sound Affects, they will make me an order soon! When I have the parts, a guitar builder will refinish the bass! I'll keep you guys updated! Thanks a lot!!
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Just my 2 cents but I'd keep the Grovers if I were you, they are cool and not as common as regular Ric keys. Also the footprint is different than other keys. I've had several with them.
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Yes, I would love to keep them too.. The only problem is that I am missing some parts of one tuner.. I will restor the 3 complete tuners, and will look for a forth one. Then I have a complete set of Grovers!!
Otherwise I think I will order this ones http://www.allparts.com/TK-7754-001-Hip ... _3945.html , or this ones : http://www.therickenbackershop.com/spar ... heads.html

Re: 4001 1974 restoration
That's great to see you taking on this project when most people would choose to take the easy way and just buy a complete bass. I also vote: Keep the Grovers! You'll find the fourth one day. Considering the support you're getting here, maybe a fellow member has one they will pass to you.
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
OK, found a set of fake grovers, so I can repair my own set!!! Will turn out great!
Looking for new potentiometers too, which values do I need?
Thanks!

New update:
Before I wasn’t able to adjust the bridge height adjustment screws. Today I was able to remove them carefully with a special wrench. Before, the previous owner gave it a shot too and the screws were damaged that way. I bought a new set of screws on eBay to replace them. They come with a fitting hexagon key too, which is really nice because Dutch hexkeys don’t fit these screws. Hopefully the package arrives today! Currently I got my eye on a set of Grover Wavy tuners. My tuners are damaged and it is easier to buy another set to replace them. Hopefully I can make a deal on those Grovers!
If not, I got 2 options. Firstly, I can use a set of fake Grovers which I have bought second handed in The Netherlands. The sizes are the same, but the inner work is different. So I can’t repair my own set with them.
Secondly, I have bought a set of new Rick 4003 tuners which look absolutely stunning. The quality of them is really high. I heard some stories about the Grovers, they seem to be weak. If so, I can use the new Rick tuners.
Bought some small spare parts too: My neck-pickup is currently being restored by Sergio. Will turn out fantastic, off course!!
I bought a ’73 bridge pickup here on RRF, hopefully it will arrive next week!!
Still looking for the right value of the potentiometers. Are they 500k for volume and 250k for tone? Thanks!!

I hope the grovers work out for you ... they do look cool!

Re: 4001 1974 restoration
I could go either way on the tuners, but it would be better if you didn't have to add 16 new screw holes to the headstock. When i removed what i thought were the original reverse action keys on my 4000, i found it had originally been outfitted with the slimline Grovers. Fortunately the new hipshot keys also covered the Grover footprint, but without refinishing, there was no going back...
And i agree the Grovers are cool looking!

Let's hope! Love the look of the Grovers too!!
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
...may I join in? But it's an '82
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Wow! Will be able to make such a picture too soon!!! Looks great
Re: 4001 1974 restoration
Today the bridge screws arrived. They fit perfectly and the height is adjustable now!! Fantastic.
I will bring the bass to a guitarbuilder tomorrow. He will replace the binding, refinish it in Burgundy, refret it and varnish the fretboard. Afterwards, the bass will look stunning!!
Ordered the electronics today, Bourns 300k lin and Bourns 300k log potentiometers. I am gonna use Sprague Orange Drops.
Will keep your guys updated, thanks for so much support!!
