Yes Jeff...that 4001S is likely a re-fin, or possibly a clear coat overspray.

Makes me thin twice about the re-finish color of my 68 4001 project that Paul W will be working on at some point. Keeping it Mapleglo as planned would make sense as I already have a Fireglo and Jetglo with CB. But I must say Jetglo with CB and a horseshoe looks nice!

FWIW the earliest black Rickenbacker bass I know of is the '60 4000 pictured in the Rittor book......isn't there a Jetglow 4001 in the '68 catalog..?
