COY stands for Color Of the Year, a program that started in 2000 and continued to 2006. During that time, you could order your Rickenbacker in the Color of the Year for that calendar year. That doesn't mean that the instrument would be completed and delivered within that year, however. Production on many of the COY instruments extended out as much as three or four years depending on the model you ordered. I had ordered a Blueburst Cheyenne II bass in late 2005, and didn't receive it until January of 2009! The official COY's were:
2000 Sea Green
2001 Desert Gold
2002 Burgundy
2003 Montezuma Brown
2004 Blue Boy (and an extension of Montezuma Brown)
2005 Blueburst
2006 Amber Fireglo
There was no COY for 2007 or beyond, but RIC is hinting there may be a return to the program coming up. That's all we know right now. Time will tell.

A certain guitarist had to go and sign an endorsement deal with . . . Duesenberg, which nixed the possibility of a new RIC Signature model.

I think John Hall has looked really hard at the "custom shop" idea and he replied to my post some time ago about the
inevitable hold ups to production ,the cost of setting up etc.etc.
Bottom line as mentioned is.."are just looking or buying?" because anything Rick produces has to sell no matter how much we like to browse and
admire the basses in question.
Looking at the posts here,the guys in the States have a few very good aftermarket "customisers" within reach and I think
thats the best option especially when you see the qualty of the work from these guys on this forum.
John Hall also mentioned the hight setting up costs of remaking the aluminium hardware and original horseshoes.
The possible answer is a strictly licensed out sourced pickup and bridge tail manufaturer.
Thing is I like the reliability of the modern neck and truss rod system as on my V63 and the CS basses for that type
of vintage reissue so using the 4003 design as a "platform" is a good idea.
I have put my CS through torture and never had to worry about string tension.humidity etc.
The only thing guys need to do aftermarket for the true vintage sound is drop in the vintage hardware parts (if made to fit all new basses) if they were available.
Anything else is a job for the outside custom guitar guy.
Is that kind of thing possible considering the potential demand for parts?

This is why I am debating about Rickenbacker doing something different. Look at this color! Rickenbacker should bring back Azureglo. I wish I was alive in the 70's when people just could order it without a problem. Today everyone needs to waste big bucks so it could be painted in Rickenbacker classic colors. Like azureglo and among others.

Back about 100 years ago,( 
), i had a an early 70's mapleglo 4001 with cb binding,fwi's,and i thought it was too plain-looking,so i had a buddy who was just starting to get into making guitars tape off the front and spray paint it that color. It turned out surprisingly well..he was able to do it and keep the binding from being painted! There's even a picture of it on this website,somewhere....if you search my posts from when i first joined RRF.
