I like it! Very, very cool, and I also like Jeff's suggestion about the plexi pickguard. I wonder if you could then trade with Rickenbacker directly to get a plexi style trussrod cover? They probably wouldn't go for it...but it's nice to think they might.
I'd like to do an "Old Glory" treatment to a Rick bass fixer-upper, someday. The next time a really, really ratty looking reasonably priced early trim 4001 becomes available, I should do it. Just seems fittin'.

Assuming I was starting with guitars that had thoroughly thrashed finishes to begin with, I'd like to retop them with spalted maple, redwood or other interesting woods. That would be a pretty hefty job, but could produce a stunning result.
As for a clear plexi truss cover, that could be done reasonably easily without a trade in. You would, of course, be violating Ric's trademark by doing so though.

Ted, the picture that Jeff sent was a model but we went away from it a bit to get the actual lines of the flag. Apparently, there is a site somewhere that he found that explains how to draw the flag in detail right down to the measurements and this is what he used. He made some adjustments as far as doing the mathematics to make it as one of my british friends here says, "proper." I wanted the flag to be straight and we had to make that adjustment because Jeff's picture had the red main stripe through the center at an angle. As far as the TRC is concerned, I am going to leave the white one as it is in the full body shot....No biggie...
The 4004 is one of my current favorites. I had the frets done and it is getting quite a bit of use.
Dave Carr, I will keep you posted as to the timeframe of coming to the UK. I will probably be staying with friends in Staines at that time and of course, a UK RIC confluence would be "lovely, jubbly..."

A simpler solution would be a Union Jack pickguard, like this one:
