First Joey, then Dee Dee, now Johnny, dead of prostate cancer at 55. What a shame.

The Ramones, along with the Sex Pistols and Dead Kennedys, were a big influence on the "punk" part of my upbringing. I was saddened to hear that Johnny left us. I just wish he and Joey would have patched things up before Joey left.

As someone who started playing in '76/'77, inspired by the new music of the time, the death of Johnny Ramone truly makes me sad.

...sometimes i just cannot help but think "i hate this ####ing world"... and not a single word anywhere in press or something - at least, here, where i live. I love you Johnny... you're the best, but... but i think you know it.

I sometimes think about the way the media works and it disgusts me too. We hear all about it if Britney Spears gets a hangnail, but sometimes the people with true talent languish in relative obscurity. For this to go largely unreported is truly sad. The people who truly loved the Ramones and people like them really are not represented in the media as we know it. We will miss their spirit and angst and attitude.

Here, in Russia, it's much the same. Okay, there was a short note in popular newspaper about Joey. No word about Dee Dee or Johnny. Well, actually there was an article about Johnny in some magazine... in late November, actually...

Wow! I was never into the punk think at the time, but I've grown to appreciate what groups like the Ramones and Sex Pistols brought to the music scene. This is the first I've heard about Johnny's passing ... damn ... double damn ... any loss hurts us all. RIP, bro ...

Steve: a bit like everywhere. There is MTV Russia, anyway...

Well there's lots of local bands, some good, some ... The quality of sound is in many cases kinda poor. As for "music from abroad"... the Beatles were very popular once. Then Doors, then, in seventies, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, etc. Dire Straits are well known. The Ramones were never on the radio here - or, at least, i've never heard them on the radio bar some tracks from "We're a happy family", like, Rock'n'roll Radio in Kiss' cover. As for pops, Boney M and Abba were popular in 70s-80s, Smokie is still very popular (goodness knows why). Scorpions seem to play here more often than anywhere else.

Good places to play... anywhere. Some big venues, three of them in Moscow. "Gorbushka" is kinda "cult" place but the quality of sound is not very good. "Oktyabr'sky" is a lot larger but as for the sound, it's much the same. "Luzhniki" is better as for the sound... Lots of clubs, different kinds of - large, small, cheap, expensive, etc. There's a Red square as well, but you have to be a Paul McCartney to play there.

As for Saint Petersburg, i really dunno. Actually, in all big cities there are places to play, places to be, but all the main concert venues concentrate around Moscow and St Petersburg. Well... something like that.

Sheena, does MTV Russia actually PLAY music videos, or has it become all dumb reality shows, like the MTV in the USA?

I was just curious about the "scene" there, are there a lot of local bands, like here, live entertainment in a lot of pubs, dancing, etc? Is it hard to get American CD's? I know I have heard things in the past where it was difficult to get things from certain bands.

Steve: there are some music videos, actually, but yes, tons of shows. To be true, i almost don't watch it. It's kinda boring.
And yes, lots of local bands, various kinds of, lots of different music fests - from official, sponsored by beer companies, to kinda obscure, where people come hitch-hiking or by train with their acoustic guitars, tents, bonfires and the stuff. Loads of different music clubs. Dancings - yes, but since i never go there, i cannot tell much about it.
To get American CDs is not so hard anymore. If it's a thing "on the charts", you can always get it, at least in "big city". There're also bootleg markets where you can get a copy of almost anything for about $3-4, an MP3 disc of about 8-10 albums for the same price, or a "home-made" CD (right from USA, Germany, etc) for about $20 or so. Some things are still hard to get, like some "good old and long forgotten" 60s bands or garage rock compilations.
