DALE FORTUNE custom Built 1999 (4001S) '64 Replica

Post by 1965candyapplered »

Hello.
Was wondering if anyone could let me know what a custom built 1999 (4001S) '64 Replica would be worth. Built by Dale Fortune & believed to be a one off. Beautiful flame top & finished in FireGlo I believe.
Sorry for my unfamiliarity with Ricks as I have mostly been a fender player.
An acquaintance of mine owns this particular bass & we were looking into its value in an exchange deal with an original 1964 Jazz bass I own.
I saw an original '64 rose Morris Import 1999 go for $14000.00
Does the fact Dale Fortune built the bass make it worth anything considerably more than say a re-issue model???

I do have a photo somewhere of the bass but have trouble locating it. Will post when I find it. in the meantime I have a picture of the bass it replicates only that it has a nice flamed top.

Photo is of an original '64 that went for $14k, not the bass I am talking about.

This would partly depend on what Dale used to build the bass. If he managed to use an old Rickenbacker body and genuine parts, then the bass has greater merit obviously. Without that, it's just a copy, although probably, a very good one.

In all probability. it's worth a fraction of an original '64 Jazz, and absolutely nowhere near the $14K quoted. $1-2K max.

I would up it to $2500 max, but no more. Dale is a fine guitar builder, but it's a copy.

Is it built from an original Rick neck, with new fretboard and wings... or is it a completely scratch-built copy?

The truss rods might tell the full story, but I'm not sure...

Gorgeous bass though. I have a Dale Fortune RM replica (built from a real Rickenbacker) and his work is exceptional.
