Yes, it's an unusual shape, but I believe it's historically accurate. Thanks to everyone for their very kind and positive words. I have to temper this with a bit of reality, though, or my conscience would bother me!
This was my first eight string 4005 construction, and although I have perfect reference material for the body and neck, the headstock proved a bit of a challenge. I laid it out and built it and found that I had to trim two of the tuners in order to fit them onto the headstock. So that's how the bass originally went out.
Graham then discovered that the neck had shifted to become nearly unplayable, so I took it back and installed longer and heavier truss rods that I'd made. Then the headstock began crack at the weakest part--where the volute and truss rod pockets intersected. So, I took it back a second time, put a new neck on, redid the headstock according to a scaled drawing that Graham sent (based on Oyama-san's 4005-8?) and refinished much of it.
So, this wasn't a home run the first time out, but thanks to Graham's patience, it's finally finished.
