'68 Rickenbacker 4001 Fireglo in Toronto
Price is a little on the high side but it sure looks sweet and the sound blows my 4001 c64s away!

This bass has been there for a while. I know I've seen it posted before either here or elsewhere. The year is exactly what I'm looking for. The biggest detractor is the non era appropriate tailpieces and bridge. I do have a few friends in the Toronto area that I may have scope it out but Aluminum tail pieces and bridges don't grow on trees. I bet RIC has a few collecting dust in the "super secret room", right next to the "bucket-O-horsies" and "box-O-4002 pickups". This stuff is across the hall from the family of Bigfoots, a Yeti, and the Unicorn pen.
The price is also a bit on the high side, especially with the mix matched parts.
Guy, have you played it? If so, how is the action?

These cast aluminium bridges are rare but can be found. I got two over the last year for my 64 and my 68. They can be a bit costly though.Kopfjaeger wrote: The biggest detractor is the non era appropriate tailpieces and bridge. Jeff,
When I was negotiating for the "Brodie" 68 horsie bass, I think negotiations stalled at 8.5 k. That bass had been owned by a forumite and both he and Mark Walker vouched for it as a "player". The neck had a solid repair but the most unsavory detail of the instrument was the seller!
I still think that bass was over priced. This Toronto bass is nicer but it's altered. I too have seen an original tailpiece for sale this past year and should have jumped on it. It's the only aluminum tail piece I remember seeing.
I'll send out a few feelers to the seller. Not sure how much shipping or fees would be to purchase it in Canada and have it shipped to me in the USA. I have to factor that into it's price.

From what I can tell from looking at the small pictures, this is a GREAT looking bass...it looks really clean & not abused!!! The Brody bass is nice, but the big minus for me wasKopfjaeger wrote:Jeff,

the splintered area where the fret board popped. I just couldn't live with it.
This bass only needs a couple of replacement parts. If you get a tailpiece/bridge & possibly get a new pick guard made, it'll be awesome! Like Jeff said, you'll probably have to wait
on the TP & it will set you back some...but if you're patient they are obtainable. It wouldn't stop me from grabbing this bass. Though I would definitely try to negotiate the price down.
Do you know if it has the original case Joe? It'll be either black w/blue lining like Mark's, or maybe even silver. In this period of two or three months in mid '68 it could have been either or.
Do you know the serial #? I'm also curious as to what kind of bobbin it has. Marks bass has the same rectangular surround with the newer style green bobbin, though it's very possible that it
has a black one with the raised edge.

Yes, this one has been seen before. The overall condition on this '68 is very impressive from a usual wear perspective, and it really looks nice. As ever, the condition of the neck/action, and lack of original parts (are the pots original, as the guard is changed out) detract, but they can be sourced.
60's basses out there in this kind of condition are definitely the exception.

Shipping should be around $100 give or take $40.Kopfjaeger wrote:Jeff,

Peanuts for a nice bass like this one! (If you want it...)
Whithin the next 6 months, you will find a proper cast alu tailpiece. This will add anothe $500 or so.
When everything will be said and done, my 68 rebuild (should I ever receive it from Paul W before the sun turns into a supernova and consume the Earth) will cost me about the same and will worth muh les because of he refinish and all.
