Just bought my fifth Rick bass. Like Greg's, all have their own unique sound (hence why I bought them) and get regular use at home, rehearsals and gigs.

For years, I had just one 4001. I had to sell that one to pay bills, etc. Now I've got... Ahem... Just a few more than one...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Tommy, one explanation is that it seems to be a genetic thing, that many RRFers inherited in their DNA, that compels them to get more than one Rickenbacker.Tommy wrote:My first was the 360/12 string. To me that was everything. That was enough. Yet, somehow I now have three. Just wondering if that is a common occurrence amongst those that buy a Ric.

I know on Guam here I have four, I know two guys who have two and one guy who has one (and he's had it for 20 years).
So in this informal island poll, 75% of RIC owners in the western Pacific have more than one!!!

Re: Officially, Do Most Ric Owners Own More Than One?
I bought a 2011 360/12 thinking that I would be in demand to do a lot of Tom Petty/ Beatles/ Byrds material. But have found that in central Michigan: A)Paying gigs are far fewer than what I had in the 70's. B)today its all blues/ Motown/ oldies rock mode, mostly without any 12 string in there.
So my group of guitars today is 1 2011 Ric 360/12, 1 Martin HD28, 1 Guild F512, and 1 Guild D55. An acoustic 12 string or Dreadnaught seem to be the best all purpose guitar if I am calling the songs, so I only need one Ric, but if I start to play bass I will then have at least 2 Ric's.
I miss living on the east coast (70's), or on the west coast (90's) where it seems like there was a bigger diversity of music being played.

I think I've owned...10? Most at once was three 4001s, I currently just have the one 4001 (and the 480 of course).

I don't believe the phenomenon of owning more than one Rickenbacker holds true to just Rickenbackers....
I own:
3 Rickenbackers
3 Fenders
2 Martins
4 Gibsons
...and one Framus....
Outside of the Rickenbackers, those other makers bring a variey of tones to the mix. Rickenbackers are not tonally diverse in my opinion, but do an awesome job at what they do....

Re: Officially, Do Most Ric Owners Own More Than One?
I have somehow found myself owning 3.
A 360/12 that was my long-term object of lust, a 360/6 that I bought butchered as a project and I am presently awaiting delivery of a 1989 610/6 (should be with me today!).
The 610 was an unexpected purchase- I'd just sold my vibraphone couldn't resist the Ric! Can't wait to get my hands on it! Expect a report.
My argument? They're all different!

Re: Officially, Do Most Ric Owners Own More Than One?
Recently acquired my fifth Rick, a 4001 fretless. I must admit that I fully intended to sell my existing Rick fretless when the latest one arrived but, now that it has, I find myself reluctant to part with the old one, as it feels like it's part of me now.
Is there an opposite of RAS? RRS (Rickenbacker Retention Syndrome)?
