Zzzzz

Post by bassduke49 »

Where is everybody? Shoveling snow and chipping ice? This is the first time I can remember where the RB department has gone without a posting for a day and a half. Hope everyone takes it easy out there.

A question for Paul B:

Did the TRC's on the 4003 models ever list the model on them, or were they always blank (with just brand name and Made in USA printed on them)?

I ask because the recent '80 4003 ATG that sold on the 'bay did not include the model # on the TRC... :?

I'm not Paul, but yes, the 4003's did have the model number on them for a time. Here's my '84 4003...

I am Paul, and yes, early ones did. Here is an '85 Red w/BT. Don't know exactly when they stopped stamping (?) in the model number.

Thanks guys.

So fair to say the TRC on that '80 ATG (with no model listed) was probably not original to the bass...

1980 seems to be the first year for BT on the 4003 model. None of the 4003 BT models from 1980 on the Register have the model no. on the TRC.

I would say that the TRC is likely original.

Depends on the "level" of black trim. We've come to think of black trim as including black(ened) hardware, too, but we really should consider the plastic, hardware (metal) and binding separately. The simplest of all to switch is the black pick guard and truss-rod cover (and there are a few variations of the "black" TRCs). The black(ened) hardware (some of it powder-coated paint, some anodized, some injection-molded plastic) seems to have been introduced in 1985-'86, but can certainly be swapped out by owners. The binding is usually "forever" (I mean, who would want to rip out black binding and put in white and refinish? Really!), and there is some variation on that as well (remember the "pinstripe" binding?). Certain finishes such as White and some Autumnglo/Walnut 4001 basses in the late '70s and early '80s had black binding on the body only -- the necks had white binding. I think (but I'm not sure) that the black binding on the neck came to be around 1985-'86 when "black trim" became standard for Midnight Blue, White, Silver, Red, and Mapleglo. You could also get the "reverse trim" option on any color from the mid-'80s until around 2002 when "black trim" was discontinued.

Agreed. The Register has options for selecting BH for "black hardware" and BT for "black trim," which usually means black TRC and pickguard (with or without black body binding). Of course as you note, by the mid-'80s there were many instruments with BH + BT and black body and neck binding.
