Beatles releasing bootlegs?

Post by Soulsaman »

This is an interesting release.

They would definitely make a ton of money if they released all their alternate and unreleased material for hardcore fans.

See this article on the BBC website for reasons why:

“Beatles rarities being released to beat copyright laws” …

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25364624
Extract taken from the BBC article:

European Union copyright law protects songs for 70 years after they are recorded, but only if they get an official release. Otherwise, copyright lasts 50 years.

In the case of The Beatles, that means their 1963 debut album Please Please Me is protected until 2033, but the unreleased session tapes for that album are not.

If Apple Corps chose not to release the recordings before the end of the year, it would mean other record labels could theoretically put them out and profit from them.

Seems that this release was purely an exercise in copyright extension/protection as the rolling global iTunes releases were all deleted after only a few minutes....

More on the matter from the BBC …

“Beatles 1963 rarities released”

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-25413838
Extract taken from the BBC article:

The 2-disc set was apparently released, then removed, early on Tuesday, causing speculation it was only being published briefly to extend the copyright period.

Fans posted screenshots of the collection on the New Zealand iTunes store, along with links which later became invalid.
Online reports suggested the same thing had happened in Australia, Russia and Saudi Arabia - although the EU's copyright laws would not apply in any of these territories.

However, the full album appeared on the UK iTunes store shortly after 14:00 GMT. The BBC has been told the songs will remain on the site "indefinitely".

Maybe as the expiration of their catalog continues, it will make them release more "bootleg" material.
