’89 MapleGlo 4003, BT, no 19th fret inlay, 3 side dots at 12

Post by DJJazzV »

’89 MapleGlo 4003, BT, no 19th fret inlay, 3 side dots at 12th fret, 2 at 9th fret.
Here is an odd one that I just got. Hopefully somebody has some information about it.
It pretty much plays and sounds exactly like the ’87 FireGlo BT in the pictures for build comparison.
It was built in December 1989. Anyone seen another like it?

That's awesome! I had an early 70's 340 with similar side dot fun :-)

The extra dots could have been added by a previous owner to help visibility, they don't line up perfectly. But the missing inlay is odd.

I don't know about Don's, but the dots on my 330 are factory original.

Thank you all for the bass compliments. I'm trying to find out more information about it. I like that a few of you posted about similar side dots. Mine also feel factory original. I can slightly feel each one, and they are all the same. They don't appear done after the factory.
The missing 19th fret inlay is the coolest part on this bass. It's like they used a V63 fingerboard and made it for 4003 inlays. I think it must have been built that way on purpose, for some reason.

I still haven't found another without the 19th fret inlay, except the V63 basses with dots, of course.
There must have been a good reason this was done. I'm looking forward to eventually finding out.

Mystery solved! Rickenbacker is awesome! They emailed me back and stated it was ordered that way. As expected, no mistake, no end of the decade build error, etc. It was a custom order.

With that information, Paul Boyer can now stop by my house on his way to the Superbowl this year and take some pictures of the black trim Rickenbacker basses for the 2nd version of his awesome Rickenbacker bass book. :D

If I had those two basses, my RAS would be taken care of for quite some time.
