I doubt fret nippers were used, probably a hammer and a chisel and some ancient dentistry tools. And is there only one knob? Does it go to 11? Where does one start with this thing? I don't suppose it's worth asking if the jackplate is still on it? It would be easier to carbon-date it.

Here's an idea. The top is obviously trashed. If I had the skills for it (which unfortunately I don't) I'd shave 4mm off the top, re-top with a nice figured wood, add checkerboard binding, and rout for a 4002-style pickup positions. Make a 4002 pickguard replica, use 4004 pickups, or toasters. It will never pass as a 4002 (and it shouldn't) but could be a nice project.

Ilan: You just described one of my favorite project ideas. I have been waiting for a sufficiently trashed 4001/3 to try that. Maybe this is the one. I am wondering what was used to fill the body routes. Some people like to use auto body filler for that but I don't think it contributes anything positive to the resonance and is probably a negative.
