I think I need a new nut on my 2012 4003

Post by armybass »

I purchased a mint 2012 Mapleglo 4003 a few weeks back and I think I know why the guy did not keep it. The nut is really high. It is impossible to get a decent set up with the nut cut the way it is. The bass sounds like an ABG instead of a Ric because the strings are so far off the FB. The neck looks straight and is really chunky.... I like it. I just want a good set up. While a good repair guy could prob fix the height of the nut there is another issue with the nut. The G string slot is cut so close to the edge of the FB it is very easy to pull it off of the FB. I have had hundreds of basses in my 30 plus years.... have had several basses with G strings close to the edge and some that would occasionally pull off. With this one I have to purposely focus on my technique and try hard not to have it slide off. SO.... with that I am thinking I just need a whole new nut, but I want it to stay as close to stock and my question is can I easily get a replacement nut from RIC or is it easy to get that same kind of nut after market. Thanks for any info I can get.

They sell 'em in the RIC Boutique:

Dealers should be able to get them too, some may actually stock 'em...
I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Perfect! How did I not know about that sight. Thanks again. Problem will be resolved when they reopen in Jan.

It will be an easy fix. Buy a few from Rickenbacker or PickOfTheRicks. You can sand the top down until all the pre-cut slots are gone, then space new slots wherever you want.

Yes sir... I think I actually might have enough nut there to do exactly that on the one I have. It is so high I and prob sand it down to where I like it and recut the slots but I will get a few to have just in case.
