That really depends on what one hopes to achieve.Colonel Sanders wrote:Not to be touched with a 20 ft pole...
Yes, it would need a refin. The need to rebind makes that
an absolute.
It just depends on how deep one wants to get.
The seller wants a bit much, but what about the long run
and a buyer's intent.
Yes, the refin will pop a third or more off the value of a mint one,
but a top notch resto and this bass could be awesome in its own right.
Case and point is with my majorly altered '71 4001S.
As Vincent Gallo said, I too would say that if I could snap
my fingers and have my bass back to original , I would not.
It's fantastic as it sits...

I would have agreed before Sepp posted the pictures of the cracks in the wings. It is a bit too much for me. I am actually not sure these could be fixed correctly. The rest surely can.chefothefuture wrote:That really depends on what one hopes to achieve.Colonel Sanders wrote:Not to be touched with a 20 ft pole...

Guys, for kicks, I'll send the crack fotos to Larry Davis for his opinion. Initially, before knowing how deep the one was, he spoke about using an epoxy filler for the cracks. Not sure if the game plane will now change because of the depth.
If for nothing else, I'd find it interesting as to what he thinks the repair odds are. I am sort of looking for one around this vintage in need of work.

If nothing else, maybe you can convince the seller to sell the bass (cheap enough) for the parts on it?

Re: Early 70's MG 4001 binding bleed
I offered 3200. Seller wants more. Cheap? It's not going to happen with this one. I thought my offer was very fair. No cracks or Glueglo, this bass would be worth much more, she's in great shape beside the flaws.jps wrote:If nothing else, maybe you can convince the seller to sell the bass (cheap enough) for the parts on it?

$3200 is about what I paid for a near mint ,all original '71, it also has the glu burst and binding has a few cracks due to age. It's a bit annoying ,but I won't do a refin on it, I like things being original.

Does yours have those long, deep, nasty cracks/splits in the body, itself, too?glking14 wrote:$3200 is about what I paid for a near mint ,all original '71, it also has the glu burst and binding has a few cracks due to age. It's a bit annoying ,but I won't do a refin on it, I like things being original.

Re: Early 70's MG 4001 binding bleed
I paid 3500 for one that had no binding issues and minor
glueburst two years ago.
It now is developing issues, so I guess I pre-paid ! LOL!
3200 is what I was thinking, though if I were in a buying mode
I might go to 3500.

Re: Early 70's MG 4001 binding bleed
My concern regarding filling the cracks now, doesn't mean they won't continue to get worse. You almost never can hide a fix like that for long, IMO. Glue / epoxy will eventually show lines in the finish, at a minimum.
I wouldn't just walk away at that price, I would run screaming. I would only pay what the parts are worth.

Re: Early 70's MG 4001 binding bleed
Looks like this bass is sold. No, not to me. Now it can stop tormenting me!! Nah, i actually stopped obsessing over it a while back. I'm curious to see where she pops up next and what's been done to her.
I need to start keeping a record with fotos of basses I've had an interest in.
