D'Addario Tapewound Strings
I have been trying different strings on my 74 4001. I tried some chromes 45-100 and really liked the sound and feel but the g string wouldn't stay tuned. I figured out it was causing tail lift so I took those off pretty quick. I put on a set of tapewound strings today and was very surprised. They were perfectly intonated without any adjustment and really feel great. I can't put the bass down! I did not have to modify the nut either. Tuning and tailpiece are stable.

Re: D'Addario Tapewound Strings
You probably would have liked the D'Addario ECB84 Custom Light set .100 to .040 much more than the ECB81 set that you've tried. They are better balanced for string tension and don't have as much tension on the D and G strings as the ECB81 set.
Glad the tapewound set it working out for you. Maybe I'll give them a try on my 4001FL someday.

For all of the cool stuff D'Addario makes, the Chromes are really a problem. Super high tension & guaranteed to make problems.
However, their black tapewound strings are really great, I'm a fan. Got a set on my 4001.

I just love a slightly aged Fireglo finish - beautiful!

Re: D'Addario Tapewound Strings
I just put a set of light LaBella WHITE tapewounds on my 4001V63.
These are impressive.....smooth as silk with a strong fundamental...turn up the treble and it is close to roundwound country, turn the treble down and the bass up a tad and boom....talking flatwound sounds.
I may consider stringing all of my basses with this string.

I have played a custom set of Progressives on my 4002 since @1993, 45-60-80-105. I thought I would never change strings. I was offered a set of the D'Addario Tapes and I have put them on to try. Impressive.

The new 4003W would look cool with a set of these strings running along the maple fretboard and the through-body-neck stock.

Had fun with the tapewounds but missed the brightness and clank of rounds. Trying out a set of DR nickel lowriders now. I am liking them!
