New Guy! New Guy!

Post by Rickenroller »

Hey everybody, I just discovered this place today. My name's Brian Henneman, I'm in a band called the Bottle Rockets. We've been around 20 years now. I worked with a band called Uncle Tupelo before that. Met Peter Buck during the recording of Uncle Tupelo's "March 16-20" album, and we've remained friendly through the years. Just played Peter's new 360 with the Bigsby and unfinished fingerboard a couple weeks ago. Been a Ric lover my whole life. Had several way back in the past, but could never afford to keep 'em in the old days. Got a brand new Fireglo 360 in 2011 and haven't played any other guitar since. Best guitar I've ever owned, and it'll be with me 'til I die. Just thought I'd introduce myself. You'll be seein' me 'round here. Lord, I love Rickenbackers I do...

Hey Brian, and welcome. I know of Bottle Rockets from way back - glad you're still around. 8)

Feel free to share pictures, videos, etc. We love that kind of thing. :)

Dewitt, Peter's tech, told me yesterday he was going to oil the board on this guitar for the first time last night with this stuff:

He says he found it years ago in a Canadian marine supply shop and it's been Peter's oil of choice since.

He also mentioned that this modern, current production 360 neck shape is Peter's new favorite profile. Given his past preference for very heavy strings and high action, I have to say I was a bit shocked as well as pleasantly surprised.

The new Rics are just phenomenal. I LOVE the neck on mine. I wouldn't trade mine for ANY old Ric. My 360 is the greatest guitar I ever met, and I've met a LOTTA guitars. Mine was built the 49th week of 2010. Boy, they sure got it right that week. I'm still playing on the factory setup...

And...I've played Peter's old 360. He had it strung with .013s and it was like tryin' to play music on a crossbow. His new one played like butter. I was stunned he was playin' with action that easy. He's gone down to .011s...

Here's another favorite photo of me an' Rikki. Me & this guitar are inseparable. Maybe I'm weird, but I'm not a guy who wants a bunch of Rics. I love the one I have. Only other Ric I could ever see myself with, is a round front 360-12. Maybe someday....

Let's just be clear and point out that larger necks and very heavy strings were Peter's stated preference. I know I certainly couldn't bear to play his older guitars for more than a few minutes!

This seems to be a change in what he likes, perhaps reflective of the type of music he's doing now.

What he told me a couple weeks ago, was he liked the easier action now that he's singing. That makes sense to me. I don't like to think about my guitar when I'm singing. There was NO WAY to not think about Peter's old Ric, it was continually trying to slice your fingertips off...

Betcha can't have just one ! !  :D
A funny thing happens if you get involved in the RRF and that is the contagious nature of acquiring more Rics, because of the differences in the various models and tones and looks of these fine instruments over the years .

Welcome aboard the RRF and those are great photos you posted
