Tony does wonderful work!! As soon as the guard gets back with the refurbished electronics and wiring, the guard will go to Tony to have him craft me a new one.

Here is a photo of the bass with the white pickguard on it, and before the new pickups were installed.

Same idea but in Fireglo.jps wrote:Here is a photo of the bass with the white pickguard on it, and before the new pickups were installed.

The caveat always, and clearly demonstrated here, in cases like this, is to get detailed photo's and not rush into snap buying decisions. The bass should have had a 48 hour grace period to check everything out, especially at the $$ involved. Given the fact that the major piece of hardware is not original, I hope Sepp managed to get significant $ back as I have just read on the other thread.
Saying that, it's still a great bass. An original 60's BG finish, unmolested, and full of mojo. Only a handful out there. The late 60's bobbin's are about the rarest of the rare, so I'd be tempted to put a '67 horseshoe/bobbin combo in personally. As mentioned, right at the crossover of the HS/Hi gain period, (Sept '68 bass with HS, Nov '68 with HG) so one really could use either.
Could have been better, but ceratinly could have been worse...

I agree.
Personally, I would slap a green hi-gain in it, and then keep an eye out for the horseshoe.

Wints,
I have a green bobbin pup coming to me from a very generous source! That gem will adorn this worthy "project". It is just the bobbin, without magnet attached so I am going to attempt to mate it with my mid/early 60's shoes and hope for enough clearance until i find a set of late 60's shoes. If there is not enough clearance, then I will be stuck in neutral until I find the shoes. Oh, I have no doubt they are out there just landing them will be difficult.
She deserves to be correct since like you said, how many 68 4001's do you see in Burgundyglo?
This purchase was far from ideal. From the start I was dealing from a position of weakness. Very uncustomary for me. The recent losses of the early 70's Jetglo from Craigs List and the 68 Toronto Horsie bass all left me with a "hair trigger". I still tear apart the lone foto that was supplied and I still can't see the red flags that I now know were there. The possibility of losing yet another one made me jump faster and harder than I normally would have. While I was first, there were many behind me who offered more and would have gotten stung harder. You are all welcome!!
Like I said, I'm not use to being the pin cushion but here I am. Like you said, It could have been worse but it could have been so much better too! I did get a little refund but nearly not enough to brag about. The refund maybe would have covered a round trip flight to Denver for a collection of dental trophies, but I would have been put in the red with a rental car or rental bike, for that matter.
I paid a premium price for an instrument that was less than advertised. I still feel the seller knew a bit more than he claims to. He had no issue refunding me via Pay Pal but refused to accept it or credit card as payment. This left me very exposed. I probably had a good case if I went the lawyer route. No disrespect to any lawyers here but, I'm sorry, I'm not a huge fan. I'll take my lumps, like a man, and move forward.
So, who has a nice set of late 60's shoes to sell me so I can get her playing?? Vince?? Come on buddy, this instrument deserves them!
Sepp
