Boss Compression Sustainer SC-3 pedal

I can't really afford the small fortune required for a Janglebox. I've been looking at a Boss Compression Sustainer SC-3 pedal on YouTube and it sounds pretty good. I can't find anything on YouTube that shows it in action with a Rickenbacker 12 string.

Can anyone give me any advice on this? Does it get near McGuinn's tone at all? I've seen one on Amazon for £50 which seems like a steal and I'm ready to pull the trigger on it.

In my experience, nothing quite gets that 60s jangle and chime like the Janglebox. But if you're looking for an inexpensive compression pedal that sounds great, look no further than this box:


It sounds excellent with a Rickenbacker 12-string. When I got my Janglebox, I quit using my Dyna Comp, and gifted it to fellow forum member Paulie Azpeitia, who has gotten much mileage and some great jangle from it than I ever did. Hopefully he'll see this and chime (pun fully intended! ) in.

I've played through the CS-3, worked well with Telecasters but wasn't really a Rickenbacker pedal. I tried the preceding pedal, the CS-2, and that was far superior.

Yes, the Boss pedal will enhance your 12-string tone and bring you closer to McGuinn's sound. But it pales in comparison to the JangleBox pedals.

I returned my SC-3 to invest in a JB2, which turned out to be one of the best purchases I've ever made. Have you considered the cheaper silver JangleBox?

I watched some more YouTube videos and reviews of the Boss and really wasn't getting a good feeling so, .......I bit the bullet and bought a Janglebox JB-1 from their website today.

My wife is going to kill me.....

I think you made exactly the right decision, Edward. The JangleBox pedals are light years beyond all the other compressors I've tried, and they were made to compliment Rickenbacker 12-strings. The JB-1 is a classic. It couples a high end compressor with a treble boost, for endless jangle and chime. It's also small enough to fit in a case or gig bag. And the new ones can use any standard adapter. Yes, the price is a bit steep, but I'm sure you'll get years of pleasure out of this purchase. My JB2 was probably the best effects investment I ever made.

For the record, if anyone IS looking into a Boss compressor, I'd recommend seeking out the old CS-1, which has a 'Treble/Normal' switch. It is much superior (in my opinion at least) to the CS-2 and the treble lift allows you to jangle to your heart's content. I've used this compressor since I first bought one in 1981, despite having tried numerous various alternatives.
The Cs-1 hasn't been made for over 30 years now, so you're looking at vintage pricing, but over in the UK it's still cheaper than the Jangle Box.

I actually have a Boss CS-1, my first Boss pedal I purchased in the late 70's. Back in those days I used it as a sustainer more than a compressor with a DS1, back then infinite sustain was being chased like a holy grail, but it wasn't living in the CS1 (Roland GR500 was home base). I have never heard anyone mention its virtues before.

I have been using a MXR clone I built some years ago that does a nice job, never thought to use the Boss CS1, thanks for the tip.
Amazing this pedal is nearly 40 years old and still works. The Japanese built them well back in those days!

I ended up paying €200 for a Janglebox JB1. It was nearly six weeks from the day I ordered it to the day it arrived, which was last Thursday. I'm glad I bought it as it's delivering those Roger McGuinn jangly tones in spades. I can't speak more highly about it. It was well worth the money. Not only does it sound great with my 360/12 but it also manages to find the sweet spot with all of my other Guitars as well. Here's a picture of it on my pedal board.

I have never tried a Janglebox but I highly recommend the Xotic SP compressor. I have the Boss as well and the Xotic is far superior. It also has a tiny footprint.
