Odd Headstock Crest

Post by mc2NY »

This is a '71 4001 headstock. The tip of the crest is pretty much nonexistent.

Is this a common occurrence that pops up on occasion....or something normal for the year?

If normal for the year, is it something that is considered a negative? Personally, I think it is kind of ugly compared to the full crest with the pointed tip.

I think that's what I would call a "Friday afternoon" bass!

That style of headstock has been dubbed the "big toe" elsewhere on here - do a search for that term on these fora and you'll see that a few members have 4001s and 4003s with this distinctive but (I have to agree) less than attractive feature. Check out the difference in the headstocks on two of my 4001s in the registry:

Is that '71 the one from Bass Northwest? they had one just like it a few months ago.

Could the "big toe syndrome" be due to a worn template maybe?

Yeah, same bass. I took delivery but after seeing the "big toe" combined with the "glue glo," plus a weird big black spot in the middle of the 5th fret....I decided to return it within 24 hours.

WARNING!!!!!!!!!

Bass Northwest boasts a "three day trial period" on "all non special order purchases." You can return it for a full refund. After three days you get store credit only. They include a sheet with their terms with your purchase.

....BUT....the FKIN ******** are FOS. As soon as I notified them the bass was being returned and attached the tracking info......they said " Store Credit Only" I emailed them back that either I get my refund or they get sued. Total B.S.
I've even bought from them in the past, which went fine...since I didn't need to return it for a refund that time.

Back to the question-
The crest did get pretty rounded off on a few instruments from the factory.
I have a couple that have this. Early 71 seems to be where the most rounded ones are from. Most of the "factory" ones are between January (KA) and July (KG).
However- one should be on the lookout for possible re-fins too.

Yep! This 4001 is a KG.

Besides the "Big Toe" and the "GlueGlo" it has a big black melanoma under the finish at the fifth fret.

don't know that I would call it a big black melanoma... looks more like an eye looking out to me.
