Yup John, she sure is purdy, but not at their asking price...+ add another $500 sales tax.
Numbers wise, it's a dog.
PS, The original case is very rough.

Jeff, jps wrote:I take it the neck pickup route is not factory if the bass is indeed from 1966. Could be a good player bass if in decent shape. Back to my question, did GC test the pickup to check if worked/produced sound?
Sorry, I missed your question. No, GC did nto test the pup. The took a resistance reading which indicated the pup was in spec, ohm wise. They have no clue that the horseshoes are the magnets that make the whole shottin match come to life. no clue whatsoever!
Any way, the inspection period is 72 hours but I got that extended until I hear back from Tom on the chargeability of my magnets.
I'm in a holding pattern.

Jeff,
Tony passed on it. I can put you in touch with the Guitar Center who was selling it if interested.

Hey Jeff,
Originally, they wanted $7,200.00. After they realized that it was a re-finished converted 4000, they offered it to me for 6K.
When you add the $500 sales tax, I felt it was overpriced by at least 2K, so I passed.

Jeff,
The OP posted a foto of a 1968 horseshoe pup assembly and wanted to know if it was legit. This was a week or so after I posted here that I was looking for a set of wide opening shoes. Tony saw the posting, knew this was exactly what i needed and gave me the heads up. I made a very fair offer to the OP, who is the national vintage mgr for Guitar Center. he agreed to my offer and told me the pup had come in the case with a 1966 RM 1999. I asked for fotos and let Tony know what the mgr had. Better fotos revealed it not to be a 1999 but what we thought was a 4001S. Under the hood fotos revealed it to be a very nicely modified 4000.
Initially, the mgr. wanted to know if the horsie belonged in the 1966. While a horsie does belong there, this one does not. The 1966 needs a raised lip bobbin.
So now I own the 1968 assembly that is off getting gaussed by Ton Brantley. I do not know the situation with the 4000. It may still be there or it may have been sold. If you want, send me a PM and send you the store managers number and email. He's a nice guy but a bit clueless about vintage Rickenbackers, as most seem to be over at Guitar Center.

Well I'll be.... Right you are. Gee this is embarrassing. Well looking at the two side by side in my own collection I concur with you. Optical illusions, though I could swear I've seen green bobbins that are short like a lipped one.Kopfjaeger wrote:
Oh for the record. The green bobbin, slotted pole piece bobbin on the 67 horseshoe pup is the exact same height as the non horseshoe green bobbin with slotted pole pieces. Exact same! Like I speculated, RIC just had wider open shoes made to accommodate the taller bobbin. My rough measurement of Mark Walkers bobbin was spot on. There was no shorter bobbin made in 1968 for use with the horseshoe pup. Earlier raised lip bobbins, yes. 1968, no.

That certainly explains the distinctly different tones between the lipped and green ones.

Re: Gaussing Mr Ed
Shoes returned from Tom Brantley and they are super!! Nice charge, i hope it stays. I'm in the process of fixing a few ****** solder joints on the pup. I also need longer adjustment screws. The4se are a course thread and different from what I have.
It may have to wait until tomorrow before she's together!!
