Rickenbacker with Marshall Amps

Post by Medicus1963 »

Hi there,

I was always asking me about the sound of a Rickenbacker Guitar, especially with Toasters, with an Marshall All Tube amp !
Do you know any artist who use this Combination ?

Thanks

Peter

Peter, a vintage Marshall 2x12 combo is my main amp - sounds great with any guitar, including Ricks:

This type of Marshall (2100 Lead & Bass 50) is Paul Weller's preferred amp, though he does use Epiphone, Gibson and Fender guitars more than Ricks these days.

The most famous Rick/Marshall artist combo is Pete Townshend...who actually invented the Marshall stack!:

Hi Peter!

E.g. Pete Townshend was using this combination! Here a site with a few pics as a proof:

http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/guit ... stack.html

In the end the JTM Marshall amps he was using sport an equal pre amp tube configuaration (a bunch of 12AX7/ ECC 83) like the iconic AC 30 - see on the right hand sinde of the info box at that page.

IMHO this is the classical british set up of that time - what created the special "invasion" sound.

As a PS:

Here are all Rickenbackers he was using during that period:

Now You just have to listen to the recordings from that era. Then You can decide better if it is Your taste.

Hi,
Thanks for all that interesting information. I just tried my 325C64 with a JCM800 4210 Combo and it sounds "Booooom" especially with the clean channel!
Distortion is not that great sound with TI flats and shortscale.

Yep!

A slight crunch is the way to go with a TI flat stringed shrtscale, IMHO.

Late to the party on this one. Love my 330 through my 50Watt 1/2 stack. But it sounds even better through a JTM1 watt head into a Alnico blue. What a sound!!

That looks like a great rig. Is your 330 the old-school Walnut?

Hey Kenny...sorry for the late reply. Yes, it is a Walnut made in 1981. I love the neck on that guitar.
