GC Rickenbacker 4001S Special?

Pretty cool! I imagine its a RIHS? I realize I'm asking for a lot but I was hoping to see the fret board extend onto the body a bit like the vintage basses. i know, I'm being unrealistic.

I know where you're coming from Sepp - I too was hoping for a bit more vintage/retro influence with these new basses. I just look forward to the day when RIC's issues over Lollar replacement pups are finally put to bed and they start incorporating original design horsies in their basses once again...

Yes, my friend, that's exactly what I was thinking! Part of me thought, Hmmm, the last time RIC did a special run for GC we got the Shadow, which was an outstanding instrument. I certainly hope these 4001s' are just as fantastic. I'll see what the consensus on them are and maybe in a few years pick one up off the secondary market, if they are as special as the Shadow is.

I just checked one out at the Nashville GC store. Firstly, the 4001s is only available at the 'Platinum' GC stores.

Lightweight, and the matte finish is really nice. I was particularly impressed with the fretboard. It does sport a RIHS for those who pondered this appliance. Overall, I liked it. YMMV. I may take the posture that RIC may market a 1999, or a different 4001s variant than the GC styled reissue. But, admittedly I will have to ponder one of these, while not trying to be overly impulsive.

It is a fine and handsome instrument, and the matte finish is impressive. Again, the matte fretboard and back of the neck were quite appealing. I'd like to see the matte fretboard on any reissue of the 4001s. Some are saying 'collectors' piece, but it's definltely a player's bass.

It's a beautiful bass for sure. But it's definitely for the collectors market given the steep price and the very limited run.

Wrong heel shape. Otherwise gorgeous.

It's interesting to note, that the 60 1999 RoMo's ordered for the Japanese market in late '09, had the square neck heel, longer throated headstock, etc.
It would be interesting to learn greater details, and exactly whats under the hood, of the GC 4001S. The GC website doesn't provide for the nuances. No doubt, its a handsome piece, and the door is still wide open to offer a more historically correct issuance without infringing on the GC bass.

Unfortunately, that's the way the cookie crumbles for the lion's share of GC employees. The non-GC chain stores I've been to are this way as well. One of the main reasons I don't like chain stores.

Yes, that's a great suggestion. Wouldn't it be great with the option of an original type HS too.

Who recalls the late Mark Tulin of 'The Electric Prunes' sporting one of those! Perhaps his was an earlier '65 or '66.

The things that strike me as special about this one are the matte finish and the fact that every one is supposed to be made with figured maple (something I wish RIC would do with all Mapleglos.) Also, regarding how ill-informed GC employees tend to be about Rics, it pians me. I do not work at a "platinum location," so I called ours to enquire about a couple of Ric basses I heard they had there before going to check them out. I waited 10 minutes after asking the guy what models they were before saying "if they have pick guards, they're probably 4003s, what are the finishes?" To which I got "black and sunburst." I thanked him and hung up. There are two 4003 owners at my store (which I am not yet) and I still know far more about Rics than either of them do. In no small part thanks to this wonderful forum. I just wish the best basses on Earth weren't marginalized by retailers. But I know a thing or two, and though we don't stock them, if anybody's looking at getting one of these GC 4001S's, I'd be happy to help you out.

I inquired last week from the GC website. I could have gotten one from their Baltimore store for $3298.00 with free shipping but with CA sales tax. Too Much.

I would paying $2500. but not $3500 to $3800.

Ah, so that's what it would look like! Your's is a sans HS model. Such a tease! So.......are you suggesting this is at or below $3280.00!? I'm waiting for Ron to chime in next.
