'73 4001 trussrod nut size

Post by DavidSchwab »

Hi everyone. I searched for this, but didn't find the answer.

I'm repairing a 4001 bass from Sept 1973. It had the usual issue where someone tightened the bent (hairpin style) rods too tight, and the threaded end bent down into the wood. The rod on the bass side was extended so much that I could not get under it to get a nut driver over the nut, nor could I loosen it with needle nose pliers. So I had to use a Dremel tool to cut the nut off!

I managed to get the ends of the rods straightened petty good. I have not yet totally removed them, but will do that next to see if I can get them even straighter. I don't think I need to cut and rethread them... fingers crossed.

But my issue now is I need to replace the nuts. Obviously one had been cut off, and the other one is very chewed up.

I'm sure these are standard parts, but does anyone know the size/thread?

It's almost brand new looking, for a 40 year old bass!

Thanks!

And yes it is!

I own a pair... March and August '73 4001s that both look like this, only the March bass has the checker binding, full width fingerboard inlays, and the split bridge. And they both have toasters.
