Hi. Hoping you guys can guide me in the right direction. My boyfriend has a 1980 4001 FG that has never been played & is interested in selling it. Any idea what kind of ballpark figure he should be asking for it?

Hi Lisa! Pics would help, but I'd say $1400-$1600 for a 4001 of that era in good condition and all-original.

Appreciate the responses. Another store quoted 1100-1400 based on the pics. Will try to bring it in on Saturday.

Why not just put it on E-Bay? Any local guitar store needs to cover their overhead, so they have to pay you less than it's worth retail. Check out similar models on E-Bay and price in the mid-range of what you see, and it'll be gone right quick.

My BF doesn't want to get involved with having to ship it & then the possibility of dealing with an issue if the buyer decides they don't want it. We've never sold anything on E-Bay. If it truly has never been played, you will leave a lot of money on the table selling it to retail store.

You can say in the ad.... No returns. Sold As is. But, if the buyer complains to Ebay that the item is not as it was described, then Ebay will reach out to you and in the end could make a judgement for you to refund the money. But looking at the pics of this Bass, that's not gonig to happen. It's a beauty. You will get hit with Ebay fee's depending on how much it sells for. Prob over a 100 in selling fee's if it sells for close to 1500. My advice, try listing on craigslist first. No fees's

Thank you, wings! I actually listed it on Craig's List about an hour ago. The ONLY thing I'm concerned about is that 3 years ago we took it to a store in NJ, and they told us one of the "tuning things" (forgive my lack of technical knowledge) had a problem. However, my BF took it to a store yesterday & they played it & had no issues. They offered him $1k yesterday; $1100 today. Still planning to take it to Brooklyn on Saturday. What ever you do, don't sell it to a music store unless the Mafia is after you for money. 
They will always low ball you. And make up excuses like the tuning peg just to lower the price. It's a very nice looking bass. Clean and vintage. Also, list it for sale on here in the Market area. its a Amber Fireglo color very desirable.I'd Hold out for 1500

I will ad that last year I bid on a lefty 1981 Fireglo in mint condition on ebay . It looked very much like yours. Very clean, not played much . It eventually sold for 3,300. Now that was a lefty. Bit more rare. So you could list it on ebay just to see what it goes up to. If you were to get something in the high teens or more then i wouldnt care about paying the fee's. if you dont like the bids, you can cancel the auction up to 12 hours before it ends.

I'm good at a lot of things, but THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM...so I really appreciate the advice. I'm going to pass it all along to my BF. The bass really is flawless. We'll see what the guy Saturday says, especially with regard to the tuning peg having an issue...or not.
