But the bass in Mexico appears to be a metallic blue, which Azureglo is not. Midnight Blue is metallic, but came along in '84-85.

Totally true. I just did not understand why you thought it was an '81. Mine is '81. The bass in the rest of the pictures is another bass.

It does not really matter. You have an estimate of its value now. And with the refin you've got an argument to knock some of the price.

Go play it. If you like it then remember what was said here. If you do not like it wait for another one.

Now I don't know which one of us is confused! :D Using the link given by the OP, the photos of the set-neck 4001 in Mexico has the jackplate that reads UH. That leads me to believe that bass was made in August of 1981. That bass has a metallic blue finish. Rickenbacker didn't have a metallic blue finish in 1981. Therefore I believe it is a refinish. I haven't looked at photos of any other bass while reading this thread, and I'm commenting only on this bass in Mexico.

Paul:

I think the confusion comes from the post I did with the pictures of the Metallic Blue refinished 4001S bass. At the bottom of that post I posted a link to a different bass with similar features that is Azureglo and is also in Mexico.

Each of you is commenting about different 4001S basses - you about the OP's link, and Barth about the bass in the link I posted.

There is an AZUREGLO one on the same site that the seller claims is from 1971.

The link contains folowing picture:

This picture was made by myself and represents my hurd from a couple of years back, and the 4001s in this picture still belongs to me. I find it strange to see my picture in a mexican advertisement.
