I believe Black Pearl is the black equivalent to the stuff he used for my custom pickguard that I had him make for my old '08 4003. IIRC, Kenny confirmed to me that it was the same material used for the inlays.DriftSpace wrote:mc2NY wrote:Pickguardian has a great material called "Black Pearl" that would look awesome inlaid on a maple board.

Jeff, I still love that bass. It looks great!

I hope Len still loves it, too.

I tend to think they could make a lot of people happy by re-introducing an S 4003 as the new standard model, while also doing fairly common runs of a bling-bling 4003 they go all-out on with all the vintage appointments (CB, pickups, FWI).cheyenne wrote:First the return of walnut wings, then the full width inlays, now we see a glimmer of hope with the checker binding, if they would just put it all together in a standard model, I would be all over it.

You are correct, Jeffrey! I love to see some inlaid; basically the opposite color configuration of your gorgeous bass.jps wrote:I believe Black Pearl is the black equivalent to the stuff he used for my custom pickguard that I had him make for my old '08 4003.

I like the pearl inlays in a maple neck, like on my '77 Jazz bass. Never liked black block Jazz necks. Even Geddy, when the black block shaved neck on his '72 J finally gave up, had Fender make him a new neck with pearl inlays.
A Ric with black inlays will look like a cheap knockoff IMHO.

It might be different with the rest of the trim matching ... and without the giant hole through the body.ilan wrote:A Ric with black inlays will look like a cheap knockoff IMHO.
I actually like Geddy's original black inlays & binding, but -- now that I think about it -- I agree with you, generally; Geddy's is the only maple-board instrument I've seen/played of which I like the look with black inlays. (Granted: that's never been a common color scheme for guitars.) I do think the black binding on the neck helps, and think that RIC could do it right, but understand the aversion because they've just never done anything other than white inlays before.
Re: Something very special is making its way through the fac
Sorry, but I'm with Ilan on this, guys. Black inlays never worked aesthetically, for me on any bass, to me they do cheapen the whole look, but as usual, YMMV.
The hole in the body stays, however!

I just noticed that these basses don't have walnut ears.heinpete wrote:...just to keep this thread alive:

Scott, if you're talking about the Fire Alarm Red, you won't be able to tell as the paint appears to be opaque.

I guess your right Paul. I looked at the headpiece and it looked transparent to me. My mistake.

All that bass lacked was checkered binding.KOLAD wrote:Wow nice bass, who made that pickguard and whats the model of it called (the shape, and the material?)

Brian, that was Jeff Scott's 4003 from when the new inlays came out.
