Getting a Vintage Rickenbacker Bass restored ?

Sepp, Tony pretty much nailed it. That's an earlier '73 HG that I bought off ebay years ago. It wasn't working when I got it so I had it rewound by Lollar. I stripped the black paint off because it was mostly off anyway. The horseshoe wasn't playing nice with the toaster and I couldn't get a even string response out of it so I swapped it out.

Slotted or domed poles on it Kevin, I can't tell. Stunning, really!!

Question for Brian, was 1964 the first year the 4001s was made? also you mentioned mine was the earliest currently known about on RRF will it be added to the register that you directed me too?

I added your bass to the RRF Register as a collected item. (I am OCD when it comes to adding data to it).

Awesome!! Same bobbin that debut in 1968 first on the horsie then with the stip magnet, although I think RIC used the small/narrow magnet initially. I had the same pup on my early 1973 4001. Loved that bass!!

I will take your word on the colour of your bass - but it looks Jetglo from the picture.

Jetglo (as the clearcoat on them ambers) slowly turns green over the years. Again it suggests (to me at least) that the finish has been on your bass for a very long time. Jetglo is very rare in 1964 - but it was a an available finish choice.

Best way to get a sense of the colour is to shoot it outside in the sunlight. I don't think Dark green is a finish option in the data base.

Absolutely beautiful bass but how come it has diamond shape inlays instead of the dots and it has binding was it refurbished to add these features ?

Brian, you might be right on the colour as the inside is totally sprayed, if we ever get some sunlight over here I'll take her outside and see, I have some higher quality imagine which I sent to LD so I'll post one in a minute so you can see it.

I think it may have been resprayed as its slight metalic - no way to findout the orginal colour prehap LD will find some evidence when he strips her down? Is that likely?

For years I have always thought the 'missing link' between the two styles is pictured in the Rittor book--labeled a '63 4001 but showing evidence of an earlier build (like '62), routs after being finished, extra screw holes with nothing to show for them, large '62 peghead and tuners etc...

Since the neck pickup rout was done later & the control cavity was enlarged to fit 4 pots, I wonder if the husk of that bass is even earlier than '62?

Maybe it's leftover from an older batch that possibly included Vincent's '61 & the single pickup Deluxe in the Smith book?

This is a very murky period for Ric Basses. It's fun playing the sleuth & trying to connect the dots.

I suppose catalogs don't exist from '61 to '63? I've never seen any.

I believe that is correct Graham. I've heard that for some reason, instead of just making a new bass for Paul, all the parts from the

righty bass (including the jack plate) were fitted to the new lefty body. Strange...

There is always the Radio-Tel doc sheet from around 24 January '64 for McCartney's bass, stating in the description (along with the DA 23 number) saying it is "left handed".....

I never found reliable "evidence" to support the statement that Rickenbacker ever offered a right-handed bass to Paul. I mentioned the invoice stated above in the book.
