Very interesting Andrew, I always thought the mute bridge was added to the S around 67, your original would seem to support the notion that both the 4001 and the S got the new mute bridge at about the same time, ie, 1964

My '63 has a mute. The mute tailpiece may have started in '61 with the 4001. Didn't the S's have the same tailpiece that was used on the deluxe 4001?

I'm not sure the 4001 had a mute in 61 when it was introduced, although the tailpiece may have already been designed with the mute in mind.

If anyone has pictures of the "deluxe" 4001 I'd very interested in seeing them.

Andrew, Ted, this type of discussion is one of the things that I truly enjoy about the Ric Forum.

Look forward to seeing them Javier. Jim, yes, this sort of discussion (and lots of others too) is what makes this place great!

when the NHL resumes playing there will be several teams trying to sign Indianapolis NBA players for their grind line ... if they can learn how to skate ...
