Mouradian Guitar Co.

Post by rictified »

Several months ago I asked for opinions on where to bring my 79 4001 in Ma. I got several replies and decided to go with Jim Mouradian and I'm glad I did. This bass led a rough life, it was the bass i made all the mistakes with learning how adjust truss rods, it fell over frontwards once and rebroke the split in the neck which I had popped years ago etc. I kept it for two reasons when I sold most of my basses several years ago:
1. I didn't want to stick anyone with it, haha!
2. it was the best sounding Rick bass I had.
So anyway I brought it to him and told him to just do whatever he though should be done with it to make it play and sound good again. He found two things, the truss rods were not opening properly inside the neck and he dressed the frets and glued some down which were loose. This thing sounds better than it ever did and plays great also. The sound is much more clear and all the dead spots on the neck are gone. So anyway if you live in the Boston area and need some work done on your Rick, he does an excellent job, is fast and is reasonable too. He also made a bass for Chris Squire which he still uses and knows him pretty well I guess. He may work on his Rick bass in the future. I think his is even more beat than mine was!
Jim has a 1970 4000 (I think that's the year he said) which has been converted into a 4001.

I've heard he knows his stuff. :) If Chris Squire is going to have a custom made...

Damn, I'd leave the 4000 alone. But I guess if I really wanted a 4000 I could convert my 75 4001.

I discovered Mouradian Guitar a few years back (thanks to a friend), and have nothing but the highest regard and praise for Jim and his son Jon.

They have worked on most of my basses, and always with great results. I've pointed a few fellow RRFers to them with excellent results as well.

In a world increasingly littered with smart-phone zombies, cyber-bullies, and people that don't give a chit in general -- I find my visits to Mouradian to be almost a step back in time. The passion, focus, and positivity in which these guys approach their work is truly a dying art.

I'm heading there next month with one of my bandmates (an all-day journey) and can't wait... :)
Watch those teeth, Marlin. I'm not sure we've properly sedated the beast . . .

He made the custom bass years ago and had a picture on a current UK magazine with Squire on the cover holding the bass. And actually I just googled it and I guess he still makes the model CS-74 bass. The way he spoke I think the 4000 had been converted before he got it.

I took my 4001 to band practice last night and the thing roars through my SVT, all kinds of sustain and it's actually brighter sounding now. I'll tell you he did a great job.

Glad to hear it's sounding so great, Bob. 8)

Btw, what type of strings did you put on it?

I can say Jim was fantastic with me, he treated my 4001 so lovingly and it came back better than ever. Besides the CS74 check out his Reality Bass. ;)

Hi Matt,

I use Dean Markley Blue Steel strings usually. I used the same strings that were on it, they sound good and last a long time. I think I have medium gauge on it now, i change gauges with how I feel, haha!

Bob - glad to hear your favorite sounding bass is back on track. I'm fortunate to live fairly near Mouradian Guitar. Jim loves Rick basses (I believe he has a '72 4001) and all guitars and basses in general. His work (and that of his son, Jon) is top-notch, his attitude is exactly what I'm looking for (straight to the point, let's get it the way you want it) and his repair prices are more than fair. Having been a regular customer for the past 6 years+ (he used to be above Cambridge Music in Porter Sq. before it closed), I would recommend them at a score of 101 out of 100. Plus, once you go in there for work every now and again, they really open up to you in terms of what they've seen over the years, and it's plenty!
Can we have everything louder than everything else?
