Question, vintage vs current mute screws

Post by Kopfjaeger »

OK, what is the difference between vintage early 70's & pre 70's mute screws as compared to the ones currently sold. I remember someone saying the newer ones are a metric thread that closely mirrors SAE but provides a slight cross thread to prevent becoming loose.

I'm looking to replace the aftermarket bolts in my 72 4001 with a more factory appearance. I realize current bolts will most likely work just fine and it's nothing a tap & die won't cure but I'd just like to know is there a difference.

Back in the old days, strap buttons and mute screws were the same thing. I think possibly you're thinking of fact that the newer strap-lock type strap buttons are metric (M5) threaded, but I can't think of any reason why Ric would change the treading of the older strap button/mute screw fitting, as they'd have to also change the mute bars as well. Everything else is imperial UNC/UNF on rics!

Re: cross-threading: I think I read that the internal wood threading of the body is still imperial, hence the slight cross threading with the M5 metric strap buttons, Mr. Hall mentioned this in a previous thread - if I can find it, i'll link to it.

I'd be as bold to hazard a guess that new mute-bolts are just the same as they always have been!
