370/12 WB

Post by 2nevet »

Hello all
I just acquired my first 12 string and let me say I am hooked-wow what a sound- Is there any advice or tips one can give to help me progress correctly in playing this instrument? any articles/books? pick preference? strings that are good for bending? vibrato? I have a set of 95404 rics any good? thanks in advance

Roger McGuinn's video on 12-string guitar is an excellent starting point. Be sure to actually buy the tangible video (disc or VHS) since it includes a little paper booklet with examples in sheet music or tab form.

I recommend Pick of the Ricks' Curt Mangan strings... you definitely want a wound G fundamental, and a wound A octave, and a 10 for the G octave. RIC strings give you this, but I like POTR's Mangan sets. Stay away from the D'addario set unless you replace the 3 strings I mentioned with singles (which I do in a pinch).

+1. When using either the RIC 10's, the Thomastik-Infeld POTR custom set, or the Mangan's. I use 9-42 on my 360-12, so I do use a 14p A octave so it intonates with about the same core diameter as the 32w fundamental A string. I also use an 8 G octave and I custom-filed for myself an offset low E saddle so the fundamental 42w intonates off the back of the saddle and the 22w octave low E intonates off the front of the saddle.

So there are various thoughts about gauges, but the one constant is the wound 3rd fundamental G string, whatever brand, model, gauge or tuning.

Are you sure? This sounds like the onset of early-stage RAS to me!!
Santa visits only once a year, but Santa Ana delivers Rics all year round.
