Pete Townshend's guitar?

...and this is how you create confusion...contemporary shot from UK Beat Instrumental magazine telling its readers what a 1997 looks like....er, that would be a 1997/12?

I remember noticing that the caption was wrong in this picture--should say Model 1993 instead of Model 1997!

So I finally got to personally speak to Alan Rogan ... (Very nice chap! )

Had quite a long chat with him about my 1997

He said that Pete really just uses his guitars as the "tools of the trade" and although there's no real provenance with my guitar, from the conversation and all the identifiers/wrong bits he said it "Could be" one of Pete's, but would find it very difficult to actually prove.

He mentioned (And I quote) "There are still rare and unseen pictures of the Beatles turning up after all this time, so it is possible that this could have been one of Pete's guitars"

That's good enough for me for now - until I get chance (Yeah right ) to show the guitar to Pete personally (Even Alan said this was a bit of a dream - LOL)

SO, with all that said if it IS one of Pete's old Ricks he's still not having it back!!

Unbelievable - two years after his first of a whole 8 posts on the RRF, this idiot is back again.

For what it's worth:

- It seems pretty clear that this guitar has no provable connection with Townshend - and even if it does, who cares?
- to suggest that Townshend is somehow comparable with the Beatles - well, as they say in Northern Ireland (where I come from), 'Catch yourself on'!
- personally, I could never understand why the Ric Corporation named a signature Rickenbacker after him, given the way he treated these fine instruments.
- 'Hope I die before I get old'? - if only! Daltrey is now 68 and Townshend is 69, but they are still out there touring and dining out on past successes - why not retire and get a bus pass like everyone else this age?

I may like (some) of his music, but I dislike everything about the man - which is why I have not even bothered to mention his first name.

Townshend is way more influential and important to me than the Beatles and most other popular music. His contribution to the popularity of Rickenbackers cannot be overstated and was certainly worthy of the LE model.

(and really... I think we can get past the Pete Townshend destruction of Rickenbackers topic. It's a tired cliche and he only ever destroyed less than eight Ricks while influencing the production and sale of untold thousands of these things.)

The guitar in this thread was not Townshend's though, despite the tenacity (and denial) of its owner to prove otherwise.

I apologise for my Christmas Eve rant - in particular the use of the word 'idiot'. On sober reflection, I acknowledge the points made by Collin.

The fact that I own almost all of the early Who albums on both vinyl and CD (including an astonishing re-mastered version of 'Tommy' on SACD) is perhaps a more accurate reflection of my assessment of the man and his music. I will now take the trouble to read Pete Townshend's autobiography 'Who I Am' to hear his side of the story - I owe him that at least.

I haven't been able to prove it, just yet, but I know that a guitar cable I bought in the very early '70s belonged to Jimi Hendrix. I am still looking for the evidence but I know in my heart that Voodoo Child flowed through it!

His autobiography is a great read - unlike some of his rock peers (notably Keith Richards), Townshend is a natural writer and intellectual so the book is a joy to read.

And while we're at it, whilst I don't feel I owe anyone an explanation about my lack of posts on this forum in the past 2 years, I actually enjoy playing my guitars and indulging in my other hobbies rather than typing - but clearly that's not good enough for some people.

I genuinely thought some of the members of this forum might actually enjoy the "Story", for that was how it was meant to come across, I just thought I'd finish it off since Alan took the time to call me.

I'll leave it there as I'm not about to go into a battle of wits with someone who is unarmed.
