What the heck is THIS?

Is there really a Rick bass in there amid the wreckage? I see a black Rick bridge, nothing else identifiable as a Rickenbacker. I would refer to the $11,000 asking price as "optimistic".

 Looks like it!

Maybe. You can see a neck pickup lead route that was cut with a Forstner bit, but other things don't quite match up unless it was heavily modified (no joke!) as the area were the control cavity should be seems like solid wood.

The area of the control cavity seems to be missing!

Yeah, I agree with Jeff that that looks like a Rick route to the neck PU. I suppose if someone wants the jacket for $11K the bass can be thrown in for free?

Actually the "bass" looks like a candidate for the same end that my first acoustic guitar had - firewood.

Who? Whom? Perhaps, he meant to type $1.10. Still, I'd have a hard time parting with a buck. Delusions of grandeur.

I know it is difficult to read in his ad, but he is writing that he actually does not expect to sell the instrument but rather wants the rest of the world to become aware of its existence, whatever that is good for :-)

THANK you! I was wondering if I was the only one that could read.

So a restoration back to original is out of the question then?

It reads more like a glorified personal/pen-pal/dating ad! He's saying "they won't sell but hey, I'm into all things Misfits/Danzig so contact me through this eBay dating site"

No Misfits fans huh? This is a legendary instrument, whether you dig it or not.

Look carefully at the inlay, and look at the headstock. It just might be a late '70's 4001 under all the detritus.

I had to look up who they were, so I guess I don't count as a fan. I'll take your work that it is a legendary instrument, though all I really see is a butcher job. :?

Kind of like what President Roosevelt said about WWII: a bass that will live in infamy.
