How much is this 1975 4001 worth?

Post by memalley »

My 1975 4001. I'm wondering how much its worth. I have it on Craigslist at $2600 but I'm getting spammed with interested parties which makes me think it is perhaps too low. What are the main determining factors for the price of these vintage beauties?

Issues:
1. Non-original, black pickguard
2. Missing the pup cover
3. Missing the two screws on either side of the bridge.
4. Neck pickup losing a little of its magnetic capacity (just sounds a bit low volume than bridge pup)
5. Frets slightly worn (as with all 4001s that have been played for 30+ years)
6. Several blemishes, e.g. dents, scratches, abrasions to the wood but otherwise mostly pristine body, neck, headstock (see pics)
7. All original hardware but one screw was replaced on the tuning machine head.
8. Rick-o-sound input remove. Bass currently only has 1 regular input jack.

I think you're a bit optimistic on your asking price, personally. These have traditionally sold in the $1500-up range, and yours is nice, but nothing extraordinary in terms of it's condition.

Just moved a white one (more rare) last year for around $1500. $2600 is more than V63 money. In fact $3k just got me a beautiful April '73 4001JG. Take that $2600 and run like hell.

Yep, take the $2600 as it about 2 times what your bass worth.

What the gang has said...

Personally, I still have a hard time believing a potential buyer still doesn't know the relative worth of the used market for this sort of bass.

This is a $1500 bass tops. Anything more than that and sell it as fast as you can...

This vote is missing some more valid (and realistic) choices; what's up with that Mike?

There's someone on Craigslist Dallas that has had a bass much like this one, Mapleglo, some wear, a '76 I believe, for sale for $3200. Its been on there about two years, IIRC...

One has to take the Craigslist ads with a grain of salt. Some are spot on, others have grandiose dreams of crazy-price land.

FWIW, I have been trying to sell my 1977 4001 FL BG for a while now:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=410640&hilit=+eBay

I had it posted at $1375 including shipping, but have had no takers at that price (I got lower offers).

Let's see, there's that guy on eBay who always wants $25,000 for his 4002, so yeah, this one MUST be worth about $10k, easy!

There, does that do it?
